An interview with Isaiah Jackson, author of "Bitcoin and Black America" ... he talks about some of the impact of racism in the financial system and in the laws that underlie it. And he sees #cryptocurrencies, particularly #Bitcoin #BTC as one way to disarm that.

I missed it, but it appears that #OpenBazaar is gone. Their #Twitter account has some details (from early 2021).
OB was a fee-free peer-to-peer marketplace. I think it was based on #cryptocurrencies ... at least #Bitcoin #BTC.

At one time, #Daddy_A had a small amount of #BTC ( #Bitcoin ), a small amount of #BCH ( Bitcoin Cash https://bitcoincash.org/ ) and an even smaller amount of #BSV ( Bitcoin Satoshi's Vision https://bitcoinsv.com/ ). I should ask him whether he still has any #cryptocurrency.
It sounds like BSV had some good ideas, but I think most of those were already in the pipeline before BSV split from BCH. I'm talking about things like increasing the block size, so that more transactions can be processed in each ten minute interval. BSV currently has a market-determined variable block size and BCH has a 32MB block size. The original BTC still uses 1MB ... which causes contention for fewer slots inside the block, and raises both transaction costs and the average wait time for transactions to process. AFAIK, BSV is the only member of the Bitcoin family to give major attention to smart contracts ... including creating a new scripting language ( "sCrypt":{https://scrypt.io/} ) to make them easier.
IMO, "smart contracts" make it easier to create non-financial applications for #blockchains and other ledgers.
BSV is also tainted by Craig Wright's claim to be Satoshi Nakamoto, the inventor of Bitcoin. https://www.coindesk.com/layer2/2022/10/21/in-craig-wright-verdict-reality-prevails/

Speculation about the identity of #Satoshi, the pseudonymous creator of #Bitcoin. Brings lots of coincidences in to support the choice of candidate.
Probably a much more solid case than Craig Wright’s claim.

#NewEgg now accepts #LiteCoin ( #LTC ) #cryptocurrency for payment in addition to #Bitcoin ( #BTC ) and #DOGEcoin ( #DOGE ).
> According to Newegg’s senior brand manager Andrew Choi, the integration of Litecoin is about making the customer experience more flexible and convenient.
> "Delivering a better online shopping experience isn’t only about price and selection – it’s also important to let people shop however they want, and that extends to offering flexible payment options."
> Newegg has been using BitPay to accept Bitcoin (BTC) since 2014 and Dogecoin (DOGE) since early this year.

Obviously, there is a point where the combination of the Fed's policies and Congress's borrow-and-spend policies will trigger inflationary price increases. No one knows for certain where that point is, but the Fed's operative assumption is based on doubling the money supply in one year during the 2008-2011 recession without any perceptible impact on prices.

By the way, in case you're not watching the #cryptocurrency space, the #SEC recently filed a suit against #Ripple Labs, the company behind the #XRP currency, for a massive unregistered securities offering. Ripple, naturally, denies that issuing XRP and selling it was a security. I believe just about every crypto exchange has delisted or at least suspended XRP due to this case.

(I think one potential lesson is not to pre-mine. Let the currency's users mine it, so that the originating entity isn't directly benefiting financially from new users. The other lesson might be to create the guiding organization as a strict non-profit or public-benefit org.)

So, it looks like I’m going to have to try out one or more #cryptocurrencies, such as #Bitcoin ( BTC ) or #Ethereum ( #ETH ).
But I’m not pretending that I can time the market, so I’m not looking to buy something that will rise high enough to make me a millionaire. I’m looking at them as a medium of exchange, a means to facilitate purchases and sales. At this point, I’m not looking at them as a store of value, and certainly not as an investment.
Despite my insistence in conversations with #sonTwo that he should likewise consider cryptocurrency only as a means to purchase things, his father-in-law has been reading about sky-high #BTC prices and is putting up a small amount of money to get started investing in #cryptocurrency.
-
@guizzy @moon@shitposter.club I guess I should pay more attention to some of these cryptocurrency things. #sonTwo's father-in-law gave him some funds to buy #BTC and #ETH.
-
Well, it looks like there is far too much opinion and not enough facts. I think I need a step-by-step primer, something that assumes I want to mine #BTC or other major cryptocurrencies. Because starting with "Join $CRYPTO_EXCHANGE or uy through LocalBitcoins" is skipping important fundamentals. Don't get me wrong: I'm sure my son is going to have to get an account on an exchange, but if he approaches it as price speculation instead of a way to buy and sell, he'll be unprepared when speculators move on to other things. ("Psst. I've got a roll of vintage Northern toilet paper. It is worth $400, but I need to sell qickly, so I'll sell it to you for $250.")
-
One of the big issues I have with #blockchain is that people lost all rationality once they saw the prices that #Bitcoin ( #BTC ) has reached. Suddenly, everything is blockchains when most things are not improved in any way by adding a blockchain.
And of course, whenever sleazeballs smell dummies with money, they start rolling out scam after scam using the magic word or phrase that convinces people to open their wallets and bank accounts.

Article is from 2017, but it still points to some of the reasons why I have refused to open a #cryptocurrency exchange account. The price volatility attracts gamblers and thieves like blood in the water attracts sharks. The lack of controls and regulation means that even traditional consumer & investment banks are safer.
(Still, no one's guaranteeing that funds siphoned from a connected bank account will be replaced.)

Trying to read "Blockchain: a practical guide to developing business, law, and technology solutions", by Joseph J. Bambara and Paul R. Allen, but I'm finding it hard going.
At least in the first chapter or two (where I am), they are unabashed #blockchain enthusiasts. And while, I happen to think there are things that blockchains are good at, even when the book came out in 2018, there were some serious questions being asked about the use of blockchains in the context of #BTC and other #cryptocurrencies.
