Getting lots of "mastodon-user-index" user agent in logs. Anybody knows about this?

Tagging this thread with #Fediverse #Security ... whomever made the script obviously read some protocol docs and some source code. With just a little #JavaScript, they were able to knock some #Misskey and #Mastodon instances to their knees.
This isn't the first, and it won't be the last. Remember when someone posted a humongous image and locked up any #GNUSocial instance that tried to download the image? Remember when someone's instance was replaced by some sort of cryptocurrency site and PuSH es from your site to theirs would crash your site because of their site's response? (I'll bet I still have that domain blocked at the firewall.)
We have to stop being naive about the intentions of those in the current migration. The overwhelming majority will have benign, if not good, intentions. But a select few will have bad intentions. Among those intentions is to colonize the Fediverse with #Twitter's culture, to come here and impose that culture of anger and disrespect upon the inhabitants here ... which already happened once with the first wave of people joining #Mastodon instance, except it was Twitter and #Tumblr at that time.

#Misskey security update. Someone created "instances" which trigger a denial of service in Misskey and possibly #Mastodon. From what I hear, #Pleroma is not vulnerable. #GNUsocial is likely also vulnerable.
We can expect a lot more of these kind of things now that the #Fediverse is getting attention.

This is a month ago, but this is a CNN reporter's take on #Mastodon (and the #Fediverse, though they apparently do not yet know that there's a lot more than Mastodon).

@clacke I agree. I typically want to see what a site looks like and what its users are publicly posting before I decide to join.
But I also think most existing users of #Mastodon and #Pleroma don't use posting scopes to their advantage. If you don't want unmentioned non-followers to view your posts, choose a follwers-only scope. If you don't want your posts in the public timelines, choose a non-public scope.

GS groups can usually be joined from any GS instance, but as @administrator mentioned, glitches may happen. #Mastodon intentionally does not support GS groups, and same for #Pleroma.

#Pjuu ( #OtterSite ) starts planning a rewrite that adds #federation ( probably only #ActivityPub ). Looking to become an alternative to #Mastodon and #Pleroma, while still joining the #Fediverse.

@lxo It isn't always that way. Sometimes I can see the post being responded to, sometimes I cannot. I often appreciate it when someone I follow repeats the post they're responding to into my timeline.
But more to the point, people post these "rules" to newbies, giving them the impression that they are doing it wrong ... and that they must shape up or ship out.
It turns out that most of the rules people post are contrary to the lived experience and expectations of those who were here before #Mastodon.

I think some of the confusion is intended. When the grand poobah of #Mastodon refers to "the Mastodon network" instead of the #Fediverse, and is also the admin of Mastodon\.social, it is only natural that people who see this get everything confused.
-
@lxo I'm guessing that's the MastoSoc user asking Gargron for democratically chosen rules. I'm sure there are some such instances in #Mastodon land, or least there were in the past.

Apparently, tens of thousands of panicked #Twitter users have rushed to join the #Fediverse (primarily #Mastodon servers, it sounds like).
There have been reports of employees misusing supposedly private direct messages for years, so it isn't like Elon Musk can suddenly reach into the database and pull up your nude selfies. He hasn't even bought the company and assumed control yet.

What do you hope for from your favorite decentralized network in 2022?
He asks in the context of #safenetwork (the product that #maidsafe has been working on for years), but it is a good question to ask about #GNUsocial, #Mastodon, #Pleroma, #Friendica, #Hubzilla, #Zap, #Diaspora, #Matrix, #XMPP, and more.

Apparently, Trump’s upcoming #socnet, TRUTH.SOCIAL, is based on #Mastodon. Which isn’t a bad decision, but the people managing the project do not know or care enough to follow the licensing requirements of the code, and it is unlikely that Mastodon’s copyright holder(s) and Mastodon GMBH will sue.

#Pleroma (and I assume #Mastodon) have ‘relays’ built in, where an instance can join other instances’ relays, so that their outgoing traffic is shared with all the other instances that are members of that relay.
The advantage of a relay is that all of an instance’s public posts are automatically shared with other participating instances, where a followbot follows each user individually.
(Another thing that #Diaspora did a long time ago to improve federation.)
Hat Thieves (formerly at hatthiev.es/ but that appears to be gone now) was a group from Spain that was exploring independent and federated services. They operated GS, Mastodon, and Pleroma instances, plus lots of other FOSS but not federated things.
Whenever they opened a new federated instance, they’d immediately start following a bunch of people, to get posts into their network feed. The Masto and Pleroma instances would get angry and mass-block the instance.

Apparently, people are pretty upset about the new #Mastodon for #iOS app.
It is definitely much more limited than similar apps ... I think it reflect's Eugen's vision of what the mobile Mastodon experience should be like. There are other apps available, even if they all stink.
For what it does, it is probably one of the better apps, but there are plenty of limits, such as:
* no unlisted posts
* no local timeline
* no federated timeline
* shows the joinmastodon.org signup list, but does not permit browsing the local timelines to help with choosing an instance.
* bug where autofilled @ mentions end up in the form "@username@username@instance.tld .tld" (including that space before the repeated TLD extension)
