> Mississippi State Men's Basketball took down the Jackson State Tigers, 69-59, on Wednesday night at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson. The Dawgs are now 10-0 on the season after having dispatched Minnesota this past Sunday, 69-51, in Minneapolis. The Dawgs have one remaining non-conference home game before SEC play starts
From their sports supporter e-mail (I once bought MSU t-shirts for #GS1 and #GS2 and #A1 when I was working in Starkville #MS).

Two people killed in #AL as #tornadoes rip through Southern states #LA #MS AL #AR #TX #TN #KY were under watches last night.

@clacke Sweden's water sounds great.
I have worked in 15 US states and I have never found a place where tap water tastes good. I always have to buy a filter or just buy bottled water.
The worst places were in #Mississippi (Jackson, Starkville #MS), #Louisiana (Baton Rouge #LA) and #California (Irwindale #CA).
In Irwindale, the water came out looking like diluted milk ... and stayed that way several minutes later. It is an old rock quarrying town, so I suspect it was just rock debris suspended in the water.
In Mississippi, the water came out yellow for a few days before getting clear again. The same thing happened in #Baton_Rouge, but it was only one or two days and it only happened once.

The first time I worked in #MS, it was Summer. The local people I worked with said it was the coolest Summer in fifteen years. I, on the other hand, had never experienced such heat and humidity. I wondered how anyone ever lived there.

Also, it isn't #MD, it is #MS that has the red flag fire weather warning today. https://www.weather.gov/

Storm and extreme cold causing #outage s in #TX (50-75K customers without power), #AR (22K), #MS (12K), #TN (136K; 118K in and around Memphis), #KY (10K), #OH (20K).
For most of those, these are not particularly high numbers, but if you see them on a map, you see a diagonal line across the country.

S informed me that her most recent supervisor had requested that she be suspended. Which she only found out by calling to find out why they hadn't called her for any of the available assignments.
After filing a mistreatment claim, they unsuspended her, but only because they did not follow established procedures in the process.
She can be cantankerous. One time, we were both working in #Louisiana. At pretty much every hotel I've been in, if you're in #LA or #MS, they go through your unlocked suitcases every day. She decided to confront the hotel manager about it and got kicked out of the hotel ... had to rush to find another place to stay that night.
As far as I can tell, they don't open TSA locks, so I just locked my stuff and carried all my electronics in the trunk of the rental car.

I'd expect #MS to have some similar cases. #Mississippi is the state where courthouses have (or had) Confederate monuments "dedicated to the men who fought for our freedom", and where the #Confederate battle flag was part of the state flag until recently.
-
@geniusmusing Yeah, I expect that #Hurricane #Ida will have nearly every federal agency involved in responding, the way Puerto Rico did after Hurricane #Maria. Co-workers are already trying to guess who gets sent to #LA and who goes to #MS or even #TN.
-
Ida lands as a category 4 hurricane with estimated sustained winds of 150MPH and gusts of 185MPH. #LA is getting torn up from the winds and the flooding. (I saw storm surge forecasts of 15ft last night, I’d guess even more ocean water than expected got pushed onshore with this higher wind speed.)
I really hope most people got out of Dodge before the storm arrived. Otherwise, this is conversation with your Maker time in #Louisiana and probably #Mississippi ( #MS ) and #Alabama ( #AL ) right now.

Several #tornadoes reported in #AL. Also some in #KS, #MO, #IL, #MS. Probably other states as well, but these are the ones I’ve seen reports about.
One passed near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which saw some major #tornado damage in 2011.

The new design for #Mississippi’s state flag: https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/03/politics/mississippi-new-state-flag-ballot-question/index.html [www cnn com] ... voters approved it during the recent election.
History of #MS state flag: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Mississippi [en wikipedia org]
The legislature has to make a final approval, but it sounds like that is a foregone conclusion.
Glad to see the end of their old flag. It sort of said “we cornfederates are still fightin’” to me.

When I was in Jackson, #MS, I took a walk and ended up in a neighborhood that looked much like the photo (minus the sign, of course). It felt like I'd been transported back fifty years. https://cybre.space/@vantablack/105319567118008233
(Coincidentally, every time I met someone and they realized I came from somewhere else, they said "It's not like it was fifty years ago; give it a chance".)

post-tropical cyclone #Zeta continues to move rapidly. The center of the storm is over Delaware, about to cross into the ocean (most of the storm is already at sea). Yesterday afternoon / evening, it was heading into Louisiana and Mississippi.
#NOAA / #NHC has issued its last advisory about the storm. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
Along the way, parts of #DE #MD #VA #NJ #NC #TN #KY #WV #LA #MS #AL were under the storm. Hopefully, because of its speedy motion, there will be less damage across most of that path.

I’m positive I couldn’t see THIS prison from the highway, but I did see an old prison near the #LA - #MS border. From “the time when they knew how to punish people”.
I’ve never beed incarcerated, but my impression is that modern US prisons are still horrible, but much less so than they used to be.
-
Hmm. I've noticed that no one ever seems to have a positive impression of #IA. I've worked for months at a time in some neighboring states ( #NE, #MO, #KS ) and never had a similar impression about them. What's especially bad about Iowa?
(I've also worked in #MS and #LA, so I might just have a rosier view.)

#NOAA / #NHC: #Hurricane #Marco is in the Gulf of Mexico. Current projections say it should weaken before it makes landfall some time tomorrow along #MS - #LA - #TX coastline.
#TropStorm #Laura is over and West of Hispaniola ( #Haiti and #DR ), expected to go over #Cuba before entering the Gulf tomorrow night / Tuesday morning and becoming a hurricane itself. Looks like it may hit near the Texas - Louisiana state border on Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

If you haven’t made an emergency evacuation plan yet, it is time to do so now. Ours is outdated, so needs work.
But basically, if you’ll need to bring it in an emergency, you should know where it is and be able to grab it quickly. If you’ve got pets or children in your home, or if you’ve got someone with health issues, you should never wait until authorities give evacuation orders. Be ready to leave and to get beyond the danger area BEFORE the crowds try to flee.
When #sonTwo and his wife were in #FL, they spent something like 12 hours one time getting from Miami / Ft Lauderdale to Tampa. Another time, they spent over a day getting out of FL into #GA, only to find that there were no places in southern GA with space available ... I think they wound up going to #MS to avoid the storm.
