Controversial update to #BucketScript riles the #Ocaml / #ReasonML community
I was just thinking (thanks to an #IRC discussion this morning) about breaking changes in programming languages and how often they split the community (or get rolled back, sometimes before an official release). Examples: #Perl 6 (now called #Raku) was originally a replacement for Perl 5, but became its own separate language (and I’m hearing that Perl 7 is facing rough sailing with the language’s community, too); #PHP 6, with radical changes that were scaled way down (PHP 6 was skipped, but later parts of the 5.x series and the 7.x series implemented some of the proposed changes). Then I come across this. -

So I’ve just watched almost two hours of videos about #Ocaml (and #OpaLang, but the interesting part of Opa is Ocaml, rather than the JavaScript part). https://ocaml.org/
Going to bed now. #TZAF
BTW: MLState, the company behind Opa, was purchased by Wallix 2-3 years ago. It appears that Opa development halted at that time. https://github.com/MLstate/opalang -

The language did a pivot ... it was originally a very functional oriented language written in #Ocaml.
#Ur / #Urweb — http://www.impredicative.com/ur/ — a functional oriented language that copies some features from Standard ML ( #SML ), #Haskell, and #Ocaml and has libraries for web-related features.
Looking at their sites, it looks like Opa has a more updated site and possibly a more updated language (though there was a release of Ur this year).
I’ve watched them on and off for several years. -

That might indicate which one has more tutorial and support resources. -

Hmm, a strongly-typed functional web language that compiles to #WebAssembly, written in #OCaml.
It can natively handle DOM, as the wasm executable runs in a Node.js runtime, eschewing any need of writing JS at all. -

He favors #Go, with #Rust as a second. Believes that !DLang's future was harmed by the Phobos vs Tango standard lib shootout a few years ago. Dismisses #Nim, #Ocaml for their lack of real-world usage. Believes that #CPlusPlus was a mistake that only got worse as it become more complex.
