#Daddy_A got a phone for nine year old #A1. I sent the lad a photo from the office window at work, but he did not respond. I will try to call him Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, cousin #GD2 reports that her phone doesn't take a charge any more. I planned to call her also, but it will have to wait until #sonOne replaces her phone.

Got to talk with #Daddy_A and #A1 for about half an hour today.
-
A new cycle begins! I found a book, "It's Hard to be Five", for #A2. Now I'll be looking for something for #A3 as well.
#A1 just got the #MaxMeow series, so he's set for a little while.
-
#Daddy_A tells me that #A1 is excited about the #MaxMeow books.
-
In conversation, #GD2 said she liked teh first https://www.maxmeow.com/ book, so I asked #Daddy_A if it seemed like something that #A1 would also like. Answer: yes!
By Tuesday, 2022-01-04, both cousins should have all three Max Meow books.

#sonTwo and his wife called and said that the planetarium projector is likely to be #GS3’s favorite gift of the year. He spent an hour last night before bed watching stars ✨ and planets 🪐 , then got out of bed and brought the projector into his bed.
So far, no feedback from #A1 … they may be holding the kids’ items for Christmas.
#GD2 contacted me directly to tell me that she liked her gifts 🎁, but no details.

Just as an example of where I think Aral’s three laws are insufficient, I bought an iPad years ago (specifically because I wanted to be able to communicate with my grandson #A1). Over the years, I’ve never been thrilled with it. For one thing, everything goes through and is controlled by Apple. You cannot even get a decent browser for it, because every browser is merely a facade over the Safari engine.
But if you own an iDevice, your only hope to displace Apple’s control is to “jailbreak” it, which is _by design_ not easy.
Following Aral’s laws, iOS / iPadOS would be designed to obey me, not Apple, but what if I want to replace their software with my own? If it is my device, the choice of what software runs on it (with limited exceptions, such as the Wi-Fi drivers and embedded OS that keep the device in compliance with FCC rules about transmitting frequencies and power) must be mine alone, and subject to some means of ensuring that some intruder cannot easily simulate my approval to switch to their operating system, the switch should be easily performed by a normal individual who is willing to learn a little about the system and how it works.
-
Now that my work schedule is more normal, I may pull out the #3DS or the #Switch and try to play a game with #A1, my 8 year old grandson.
I brought both of them on this trip, but in 3 months, I haven’t had either one turned on for more than ten minutes total. I really should have brought the #PSP instead.
But if he and I play together, it will be worth it.

Well, #A1 is not getting a Relay. The feature set was perfect, but they aren't pushing the family-related product any more. https://nu.federati.net/attachment/283652

Sent this to S and Mark. It is the gift I am sending to #GD2, #A1, and #GS3. https://nu.federati.net/attachment/283549

Picked something for #A1 ... I will probably send the same thing to #GD2 and #GS2 (despite him being 5.5 years younger than the recommended age ... if the parents handle it for him, it will be okay). That means that the search begins for items the siblings will enjoy as much as these three will enjoy the "planetarium projector:{https://www.target.com/p/smithsonian-planetarium-projector/-/A-52213640}.

I closed my #Facebook account years ago. I have never regreted it. I lost contact with a nephew that didn't use any other channel, but that fixed itself later.
I considered opening an #Instagram account back when #A1's baby pictures were being posted there, but I decided not to join.
As Facebook focused more on walls than garden, trying to motivate me to rejoin so I can see some content, I have never been tempted.

I am told that #A1 has his Dog Man books and is very glad.
-
I shipped #A1's books today. I included a list of books I could not obtain, so that #Daddy_A can purchase the missing books in the series.
Also bought two books in a series that were in the ages 8-13 section but appear too mature for 8 year olds. I requested that my son pre-read to decide if and when A1 is ready for them.
-
Planned to have a #videochat with #A1 and #A3 (also #A2, if he would be in the mood to talk), but it did not happen.
Planned to talk about Dog Man books.
This is a trick that he should have caught onto by now, but so far he hasn't let on that he figured it out. We talk about it and then within a week or two, he has what we talked about.
We talk about plenty of things that he's not getting, but we do talk about the items that will be in the box.
-
My grandson #A2 would have been a Kindergarten student if he'd been attending here, but since his birthday is after August 1st, he gets to wait until next year.
Both he and #A3 are enjoying Pre-K. Meanwhile, #A1 is a big 3rd grader.

Target has books in the ‘Captain Underpants’ series on sale for $8 and books in the ‘Dog Man’ series on sale for $9 ($3 below normal price).
However, they don’t have ‘A Tale of Two Kitties’ or ‘Dog Man and Cat Kid’ in stock. Those are the two Dog Man books I’m missing for #GD2.
I still do not have a list of which books #A1 already has, so he’s going to have to wait. #Daddy_A is still too worried about the medical issue to either get me a list himself or hand the phone to his son and say “take photos of the book covers” and then send them to me.
Meanwhile, #sonTwo has committed to read them to #GS3 if I send them. Which means he’s likely to get some of the books.

Autoplay is nice if you hand your tablet to your 2 year old, because the child doesn't have to keep pressing things. But it also means they can be exposed to every sort of random garbage.
When #A1 was doing this, he mostly found Thomas the Tank Engine videos and other train stuff. (So nothing like the weirdness that people used to talk about.)
He found one where people set up model trains to have a train wreck and he emulated that with his Thomas toys for months.

Audio was distorted, but I did get to #videochat with #GS3 for a couple of minutes before bedtime. He asked me “wha you doing?”, then showed me his book and pointed out some of the characters. Then it was time to say good night. First he said “no, don’t go”, but then he was ready and said good night.
Reminds me of his cousin #A1, whose “terrible twos” was that he said “no” to his mom a couple of times. (He’s very much like his dad … we used to arrange “supervised rebellion” for #Daddy_A so that he wouldn’t wait until his thirties to disobediently try something.)
-
During Sunday’s #videochat, I showed #GS3 two books I bought for #A1. He got a big smile on his face and said “books” in the clearest English I’ve heard from him.
So Grandpa went to Target and found three new books. I’ll try to ship this week.
