@dragnucs What I mean is they use the same APIs and AP protocol, and attract pretty much the same people (those who will even consider using the #Fediverse instead of [or in addition to] #Corpocentric #Lockiverse platforms like #Facebook, #Instagram, #Twitter).

One more advantage that #Wire has over #Signal: the devs have said they are working toward implementing #federation. If you think about it, you cannot rely upon any organization to remain non-evil in their intentions toward you. With federation, you and your contacts can disperse among various hosters or even #self-host, while still being able to stay in contact with one another.
Good luck trying to stay in touch if you close your account on a non-federated #corpocentric chat and messaging service.

I’m okay with cross-posters, providing the following is true:
(1) If the original account-holder is not the one operating the cross-poster, the operator makes that clear and offers to turn it over if the original account-holder ever shows up;
(2) Filter out conversations from the other site;
(3) If the original account-holder is here, don’t treat us worse than the other site. Be present to answer responses, just as at the other site;
(4) Other than a few specific bots, non-conversational relays are undesireable.
.
My preference is make the #Fediverse your home and relay to the #corpocentric sites.

Am I the only one that uses browsers’ “inspect” functions to remove “Chat with us” and “Share on [various #corpocentric social sites]” from visited sites?

@moonman You're better off just getting the equivalent of a DO droplet (but don't use an account you already have) and hosting a separate instance. Whomever pulled the strings to make all the #corpocentric #socnets drop them at once could easily do the same with your dedi-hosting provider.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/why-facebook-is-powerless-to-stop-its-own-descent/ [ZDNet]
The article claims fewer people trust #Facebook and “user engagement” is falling while growth has slowed.
While I do want Facebook and other #corpocentric sites to lose their attractiveness to the people that currently use them, I think the author writes from Disney’s Fantasyland instead the real world.

Oh, there's something I didn't know. So the major #corpocentric socnets all kicked Alex Jones off their sites? I don't know what he said (I've never listened to him, not even once) to cause it, but I'm surprised I didn't hear a whirlwind of angry reactions before the big crackdown. Hmm, that's unusual enough to be worthy of suspicion. Maybe there was a conspiracy after all.

@alpacaherder @clacke It mostly stayed full of cool people until the #bifurcation, when some stayed in the #fediverse, some went to the #pumpiverse, and many were #lost to the #corpocentric networks.
-
@gamehawk I'd expect that to violate the ToS for most #corpocentric sites. If you're talking about using a droplet anyway, publish there and then link it on the silos. #POSSE

@xj9 #Searx still depends on #corpocentric search engines for its results. It therefore depends on their good will. In this way, it is similar to #Startpage / #Ixquick and #DDG.
I'd love to see a P2P search like #Yacy, but with good results.

@bob @maiyannah @verius @cwebber
Part of that has been ISPs and media companies intentionally removing agency from most people, because they still fear Napster.next(). But for the good of federated networks and peer-to-peer networks, we need more and smaller instances, hosted by more individuals and small groups.
The current "center of gravity" model is dangerous in its tendency toward becoming nearly as centralized as the #corpocentric networks.
-
@gamehawk I try not to make people feel guilt if they still find use for #corpocentric sites. Better to try to improve the utility of #federated sites, so they'll gradually realize these networks meet their needs better.

I occasionally look at this list https://www.prxbx.com/email/ but the truth is, my contacts give more info about me to #corpocentric service providers than any privacy-conscious provider can prevent.
