I thought their "best estimate" was several times too low, just based on published numbers (JHU and other trackers). My calculator said that around 50 million US residents would have to have been infected to hit 100 thousand deaths. We have the deaths, but no one is suggesting that nearly 1 in 7 Americans have already been infected.

One brother works in public health. Another brother was furloughed due to #COVID-19 restrictions and is very eager to return to work. Every now and then, I catch part of their back and forth over the lockdowns.
As for me, I don't desire to go back to my current employer and its overcrowded buildings, but I'd be happy to replace them with a different employer (where reasonable actions to safeguard oneself against #SARS-CoV-2 are accepted).

@geniusmusing Indeed. I greatly prefer bottles and jars unless I’m eating in the car as I travel somewhere. For one thing, it is hard to get the number of packets needed for your preferred flavor balance without having extras that get thrown away. (Especially now, when the person with the excess packets may have an asymptomatic or presymtomatic but still contagious #COVID-19 infection.)
I’m also noticing that a lot of packets are made with individual layers of multiple materials ... they are not recyclable at all.

Tyler Durden argues that lockdowns’ efficacy is unproven, but that is false. Remembering that the purpose of the lockdowns is to slow the virus’ spread, not to stop it, any unbiased look at infection rates and lockdowns will show plainly that they work.
As for the economic damage, it is true that we need to start deciding what a reopened economy will look like and then build that. And, yes, I agree that a deep and prolonged economic downturn will itself lead to the deaths of many.
When we see 600 people infected at a single meat processing plant, it is clear that reopening without significant workplace restructuring (and that includes both sick pay and enforceable rights to use it, plus distancing requirements) is merely going to speed up the infections.
In the US, 97,940 people are recorded as having died due to #COVID-19 in under six months. While that is only 0.02% of the US population, let’s compare it to some significant events which transformed our nation:
Viet Nam war: 58,000 US military members died over more than a decade.
2001-09-11 terror attacks: 3,000 people died in one day.
