Someone from #NOAA / #NWS was in one of our weekly conference calls, so I asked whether they had considered changing their terminology from "watch" and "warning", because people often have difficulty distinguishing which level of alert is being sent.
The weather service employee said they are starting to move away from using such terms because they want to get their point across to the general public.
For example, instead of "there's a tornado watch in this area tonight", they're starting to say "there is a 40% chance that we'll see a tornado in the area this evening". The warning itself will still be a warning, but they're studying ways to tweak the content so that it communicates better.

I did talk to #Daddy_A and Mike/Ami/Jade tonight and informed them that severe weather is heading their way. These were regularly scheduled calls, but I was able to talk about the weather (and about the Brooklyn subway shooting).
Colby is also in that area, but I do not have a regularly scheduled call with him.

Winter weather, Winter storm, and wind chill alerts for parts of #NE, #KS, #MO, #IL, #IA. The alerts I received go right up to the state borders of #OK and #AR, so I expect there are other alerts valid for those areas.
Includes snow, mixed precipitation, wind, ice, extreme cold (-30F / -34C in central Nebraska), with extreme wind chills being mostly across the Northern part of the area. #NOAA / #NWS has sent at least 20 alerts since 04:00 Eastern (03:00 Central). Weather begins this afternoon / evening and continues through Saturday, possibly into Sunday in some areas.
If you're in the middle of the US, take proper care. This weather can kill, either directly or by causing traffic collisions.

#NOAA / #NWS alerting for Winter storm, extreme cold in #NE and #IA. Up to 5 inches of snow could accumulate. Wind chills could be as low as -20F. Tomorrow evening through Saturday evening, with Eastern areas getting it later than Western areas.
I have not been to either place in Winter, so that may turn out to be picnic weather. But if the Weather Service sends alerts, it probably means what it says.

As #NOAA / #NWS continues to send alerts (probably approaching fifty now), the phone says "would you like to temporarily mute this conversation?"
