So it turns out my SSL 9000 preamp was fine, and not partly bad like I thought. When I fired it up, everything worked fine, but when I engaged the HPF it started outputting a massive amount of low frequency noise, and the noise changed frequency when you turned the main HPF pot.
Turns out the calibration procedure starts with the circuit oscillating, and you fine tune it with another pot.
