These are long-term hospitalized patients. It might be possible that some of the changes are the result of long periods on respirator machines. I do know that I saw one article where they described damaged vocal cords as one of the lasting effects of respirators, so there could be other such effects.

I’m not saying that this is the cause, merely that the article doesn’t consider other possible causes besides #2019-nCoV infections.
