The wind turbines in #SoCal that were installed in the late 1970s were left in place until they failed. Last time I drove past the Bakersfield area and the Palm Springs area, both of them still had ancient wind turbines, most of which were no longer working. A number of them had caught fire. Some had broken blades. I think one or two had broken support towers, and some seem to have dropped their propellers entirely.
I suspect it had to do with the way the US financed their operation (tax breaks such as accelerated depreciation; with legally mandated higher pricing paid by utilities for renewable energy). When the higher pricing rules went away and the depreciation was finished, they weren't profitable enough to invest in maintenance and replacement.
