@fu I have not heard of #Status.im before. From a quick look, it reminds me of #Nostr, but #P2P instead of using relay servers.
(Last time I looked, Nostr did not have a decent #Android client, but I hear that the Damus #IOS client is great.)

Whew. The #i2p project should clean out their default addressbook in the I2P program, at least the #Android version. Most of the sites listed no longer exist.
-
https://nostr.com/ Took a look, but there doesn't seem to be a production-ready #Nostr client for #Android.

On my #Android tablet, ManyVerse ( an #SSB client ) complains that it can't connect to any pubs. I had it connected to multiple pubs, but they appear to have closed. I don't know if it is worth seeking out a new batch.

#Samsung, among others, has leaked their #Android app-signing keys.
> Guess what has happened! Łukasz Siewierski, a member of Google's Android Security Team, has a post on the Android Partner Vulnerability Initiative (AVPI) issue tracker detailing leaked platform certificate keys that are actively being used to sign malware. The post is just a list of the keys, but running each one through APKMirror or Google's VirusTotal site will put names to some of the compromised keys: Samsung, LG, and Mediatek are the heavy hitters on the list of leaked keys, along with some smaller OEMs like Revoview and Szroco, which makes Walmart's Onn tablets.
...
> What OEMs really need to do is stop using the compromised keys to secure their apps. It's not clear why Samsung continues to use the key. Android's APK Signature Scheme V3 allows developers to change app keys with just an update—you authenticate an app with the new and old key and indicate that only the new key is supported for updates. This is a requirement for Play Store apps, but again, system apps from OEMs are not subject to any of the Play Store rules, so some OEMs are still using the old v2 signature scheme.
> Thankfully, these leaked keys are only for apps and not the keys used to sign OS updates. So even if the v3 signature scheme is not in use, theoretically the affected companies could ship a still-secure OTA update that includes new system apps with new keys, and they could make new corresponding Play Store updates that are compatible with those new keys. That sounds like a lot of work, though.

> Google Wi-Fi Provisioner won't work unless you enable Play Services
> Samsung Location SDK won't work unless you enable Play Services
I might believe that if #Wi-Fi wasn't working all the time I have had this phone. As for #location, that is turned off anyway. If there is any legitimate purpose for which the phone needs its location, tower triangulation can help a lot.
It makes me wonder what is so important about Play Services. What extra data collection or owner / user monitoring is embedded that #Android itself lacks?

Lenovo Tab3 ... still running #Android v.6.0 with last (only) update in 2017. Time to see about flashing an updated OS onto it.
-
#Android apps updating. #F-Droid presented me with 34 updates. Likely due to #log4j vulnerability.
-
@geniusmusing
Believed affected: * cloud platforms
* enterprise applications ( which are often written in #Java )
* Minecraft ( which was where the #log4j flaw was discovered )
* #Android apps ( noted by @clacke )
Possibly, other "log4" libraries may have a similar flaw.

I have an old #Samsung Galaxy A tablet. I primarily use it for watching streams (videogames … twitch and seriousposters) and videochats. Whatever #Android version it runs has not been updated in years.
I want to replace it … and possibly install LineageOS or another such OS on the decommissioned device.

Today I learned: "Anbox":{https://anbox.io/} ... #Android in a Box. #Anbox allows Android to run on top of a #GNU / #Linux distro, integrated with it.
Uses #LXC and other standard technologies.

When did #Android start hiding the 'apps' that have used the most of the current battery charge? https://nu.federati.net/attachment/280731

Many years ago, Franklin Droid created a mobile OS named after his wife Ann. When you use #F-Droid to install programs for #Android, you honor his memory and hers.

I'm hearing that #Google and #Apple are removing the apps for the #Parler #socnet from the #Android PlayStore and the #iOS AppStore.
I'd argue that given their duopoly on mobile operating systems, the power to arbitrarily kick someone out is scary (regardless of how deserving Parler might be; I'm not even sure I've seen a screenshot of the site). I'd argue that this is evidence that the mobile OS and app store groups of both companies need to be split up, so that competition can come ... including strong competition for mobile app stores on each platform.
Again, Parler may deserve it, especially if their users used the socnet to organize their insurrection attempt. (Though I suspect many of them probably used odious #corpocentric sites like #Twitter or #Facebook, which are not being punished.)

#LuneOS (a #webOS continuation project) released an updated version in late October (2020), but I just learned of it today.

I liked webOS on the #Palm_Pre. On the #Touchpad tablet, it wasn't the same, but it was still quite a bit better for me than #Android 3.1.

Of course,it has other consequences, and honestly, if my phone was stolen, I'd want it to get a secure wipe. Search for "Brother Orange" in #DDG or #Google, and you'll see why.
#Android isn't the only one with such a misfeature. In organizations with #Apple #iOS devices, re-use after an employee leaves can be painful. Sometimes, after days or weeks of delay, Apple will inlock the devices for re-use, but sometimes, the org must buy a new phone.

And #Manyverse ( #SSB client for #iOS and #Android ) is suddenly picking up incoming posts, at least on the iPad. I'll check the other tablet later.
