While I’m sure the numbers they’ve reported are “optimistic” and have been all along, it is difficult to hide that many deaths (12X the official numbers), the midst of the outbreak. Yes, even in the People’s Republic of ?? China.

I forwarded the YT link that @simsa03 posted to my co-worker K, who lives in the vicinity of NYC. He said that he knows where the hospital in question is located.
Also, Mark said that someone working at his office (a man in his seventies) recently had pneumonia and had to leave the assignment. AFAIK, the man was not tested for #COVID-19. The staff is currently mostly working from their hotels, but they were not doing so at the time.

Using these graphs this way is wrong. It will take weeks to tell when the curve started to flatten, because it takes some time before people begin to notice #COVID-19 symptoms severe enough to seek medical attention. Also, since AFAIK the US still has a shortage of test kits, the curve in the graph is probably bounded by the number of kits available, not by the number of people infected.

I don't think the article controls very well for anything. In particular, in both China and Italy, the overwhelming majority of reported infections have happened in a single region of the country, so "19 days past the 100th case" of #2019-nCoV means something quite different when most of the cases are in a single subregion of a country than when they are fairly well spread out. It is much easier for a given number of cases to overwhelm the medical capacity of a single region than it is to overwhelm the entire country. (And overwhelming an area's medical capacity, according to "flatten the curve", makes all the difference.)
If anything, Durden makes a case he did not argue: that the pattern of (known) #COVID-19 infections in the #USA is different enough that the country's experience should not be compared to either #China or #Italy.

They should have at least read the list of symptoms (I'm sure your state health dept has it). Then they'd know that runny nose is NOT a common symptom of #COVID-19.
