LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} (lnxw48a1)'s status on Saturday, 16-May-2020 03:25:28 UTC LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} I've been 'ignoring' newsbots (and one person that often posts the identical thing from 3-4 different accounts) that pollute the #Linux hashtag on #Diaspora.
That's cleaned up my timeline quite a bit, but it will probably be stagnant now. -
LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} (lnxw48a1)'s status on Monday, 11-May-2020 19:34:43 UTC LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} So many #newsbots / #bots squat on the #Diaspora "Linux" hashtag. Most of them have multiple incarnations on different instances, so each post may appear in the stream 2-3 times. No wonder I only log in about once every 2-3 months.
(I'm using "ignore this poster" to manage the most frequent posting bots. They seem to make hashtags useless, because they pollute the stream with peripherally-connected junk articles.) -

When GPlus opened, I immediately knew how to use it because I already used #Diaspora.
Unfortunately, D*'s development stagnated once its focus on confining posts to a selected audience was no longer unique. -
deadsuperhero (sean)'s status on Wednesday, 12-Feb-2020 08:15:34 UTC deadsuperhero Hi, I'm Sean. ??
I'm an emotionally all-over-the-place man-child who is sometimes embarrassed by his own existence. I enjoy getting lost in wistful ideas and crying, although I try not to do it visibly in public too often.
Currently, I'm in the process of joining the military. In the past, I worked in tech and lived in San Francisco. I'm a college dropout who "grew up" in the Midwest.
Some of my passions include creating art, writing poetry and science fiction, and designing 2D adventure games. I have some experience with working in Open Source and have done a handful of interviews regarding my involvement in #Diaspora and the #fediverse. -
deadsuperhero (sean)'s status on Thursday, 23-Jan-2020 17:18:41 UTC deadsuperhero So... #Diaspora finally merged in support for an API! ?

LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} (lnxw48a1)'s status on Wednesday, 25-Dec-2019 18:13:25 UTC LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} Honestly, I would prefer to use #Diaspora over the "15 columns" Fediverse server, but whenever I log into my D* account, almost all my contacts have been silent for years and my stream is full of posts from newsbots squatting on the tags I've subscribed to. Whenever there is a real post, it is usually some political thing, rather than something I actually want to see.
(No, simple mode does not fix most of the irritations of the multi-column interface. Though now that I've seen #Twitter's multi-column UI, I can see why people use it.)
Also, what bozo decided years later that Diaspora (at least the JD instance) should start sending notifications and e-mails about people's birthdays? I believe that most of the people that joined early on joined specifically because they did not want their personal information dispersed unnecessarily. IMO, this is a violation of their trust. (Maybe this should be *opt-in* ... if you want your contacts to be notified of your important days such as birthdays and holidays, click a box to enable it.) -

Within days after it was announced, I requested an account, found it dissatisfying, closed my account. In many ways, I thought it would have been better as "makrcities", without any (known) relationship to #Diaspora.
.
I later felt bad about how negative my reaction had been. They tried hard to shed the unsatisfiable demands of D*'s users, but those same users were their original userbase, and thus really critical of the site's centralization. -
LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} (lnxw48a1)'s status on Monday, 18-Nov-2019 00:09:08 UTC LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} Whenever JD sends one of those “$NAME has a birthday today” messages, I think about finally closing the account. Between nearly all my contacts having abandoned #Diaspora years ago and tons of #newsbots posting article links in any #hashtag I have subscribed to, the content is mostly undesirable. -

This complicates the plan to add a #Pleroma instance for !FNetworks before we upgrade to !gnusocial 2.0. I'm not really interested in hosting incompatible services (one reason why planned #Diaspora and #Pump.io instances were abandoned). -

#FENEAS taking over JD.

And JPope, who I met in person, the person who inspired me to first rent a VPS and set up a self-hosted StatusNet instance. -

I immediately noticed that it seems that none of my old contacts post anymore, but because of "followed tags" I get lots and lots of posts which are just an excerpt of an article followed by a link (and often, they don't even go to the original article's site; take https://www.sciencealert.com/a-tech-expert-says-we-should-stop-using-google-chrome for example). These posts are almost entirely uninteresting to me.
I've had the account on JD for a long time, but if I close it, it may free up some resources for another user. I'm really considering it, for the first time. -

They got lots of requests and suggestions, but as you noted, the real need is developers. Eventually, the requesters feel ignored and leave for #corpocentric platforms. Or they propose hostile forks without enough devs to make their efforts viable. -

Eric Buijs (ericbuijs)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Jan-2019 17:06:44 UTC Eric Buijs A somewhat older (2016) but still interesting article about the history of #Hubzilla. Also contains a biography of Mike Macgirvin the developer that started #Friendica, Hubzilla and #Osada. It's interesting to learn that Mike launched Mistpark, the predecessor of Friendica, before #Diaspora*.

INACTIVE (deadsuperhero)'s status on Tuesday, 04-Dec-2018 19:02:39 UTC INACTIVE Since #introductions are all going on, I might as well throw mine in.
Hi! I'm Sean. I've been a part of the federated social web for a pretty long time, and used to be the Community Manager at #Diaspora. I'm actually pretty obsessed with the space, and spend a lot of my spare time studying it and writing about it on my bespoke publication, We Distribute.
I've been using GNU/Linux since I was 12, play four instruments, love to sing karaoke, and aspire to be a writer / game designer / astronaut.

HankG (hankg)'s status on Tuesday, 27-Nov-2018 20:00:55 UTC HankG Decided to go to the FOSDEM 2019 conference in Belgium. Looking forward to seeing some co-collaborators there for the first time and discussing topics around #diaspora #mastodon and the #fediverse in Decentralized Internet DevRoom. Anyone else going from here? https://fosdem.org/2019/
