When the GOOG started to cut back and then launched a competing browser, Moz panicked (rightly) because all the high-sounding promises they made were predicated on this huge level of funding that went away.
Now that #Firefox holds a small sliver of its former market share, and nearly all of its competitors build upon Google’s code (which forked from Apple’s code, which itself was forked from KDE’s code), the going is rough and getting rougher. -

Yahoo used to be close (even with a Bing backend) and #DuckDuckGo was even closer (with Bing, #Yandex, and others), but lately, using a non-G search results in just going back to G.
.
The deep secret among search providers is that the "B" in #Bing stands for "broken". Despite 20+ years of Microsoft pouring money into search, its results are usually comparable in their awfulness with #Ask.
.
#Seeks & #Searx can get decent results when they're set to use Google as their provider, but if an instance gets popular, it will hit its API limit. -

None for me, thank you. I see the kinds of garbage that gets into the #Google #Play_Store. I’d rather rely on a few motivated #F-Droid maintainers to inspect and package the software on my devices than your auto-scan software.
(BTW, let me emphasize again that #de-google is NOT ENOUGH. #DecentraLife ... I want to remove not just Google from my life, but all #corpocentric gatekeepers.) -

We've improved our home page a bit, raising the #services we host to a more central role. Go check them out!
Speaking of services, we've recently added #Collabora to our #Nextcloud stack. Collabora allows real-time collaboration on rich-text documents, replacing the need for things like #Google Docs. Yes, this is a good trend, but if it stops with Google, it is an absolute failure at protecting privacy. Instead of “De-Google” it needs to be DecentraLife (including giving up #Google, #Facebook, #Amazon, #Microsoft, and other large corporations that spy on users) ... avoiding the concentration of users and resources that enables these companies to abuse users in the first place. -

But when #lazyNephew grumbles about lag and slowness (the connection here is 50Mbps down and 50Mbps up) in his current gameplay, I imagine that those whose connections are slower than this are having even worse experiences. Therefore, I think a streaming-only game solution is doomed to be unusable in most of the US.
Maybe they can bring back the local pay-to-play shops where Internet speeds were higher than normal, so that gamers can satisfy their online multiplayer needs. Otherwise, the best online multiplayer experiences will have to come from reviving peer-based LAN parties. -

I have hosted YaCy instances in the past, in part to help improve the peer network's results by crawling and indexing sites related to databases, Java, Tcl, Python, PHP (the things I was searching for most often at the time).
I intend to host YaCy again (perhaps feeding a #Searx instance, so its results would not be wholly dependent on the goodwill of big corporate search engines). -
The Human (blort)'s status on Friday, 04-Oct-2019 18:30:52 UTC The Human WTF?! My non-rooted phone had #Google Maps pre-installed, but I only use #OSMand for navigation etc.
Yesterday, I walked to a local restaurant, without using my phone, and had lunch there before walking back.
I never opened #GoogleMaps.
Today, I find a notification from Maps:
How was {restaurant name}?
Rate places to get smarter recommendations. So it tracked and calculated where I ate without even opening my phone or the app.
Definitely time for #Pinephone / #LibreM

Non-bubbling may be part of it, but it doesn’t explain the sharply different results (or at least sort order of the results) between the Bing and Yahoo.
It doesn’t surprise me that #Startpage’s results differ from #Google’s, even beyond the filter bubble.
As for which to use, I use a variety, including Startpage, but the main one is determined mainly by quality of results, and Startpage’s results are generally inferior to #DuckDuckGo and to #Searx & #Seeks (but far superior to #YaCy or the abysmal results that #Ask gives). -
