Hmm. I've noticed that no one ever seems to have a positive impression of #IA. I've worked for months at a time in some neighboring states ( #NE, #MO, #KS ) and never had a similar impression about them. What's especially bad about Iowa?
(I've also worked in #MS and #LA, so I might just have a rosier view.)

However, the storm moved through #LA and #TX pretty quickly, so it appears to have caused less damage than expected.

I really only know one person in #LA ... a former #Fediverse member (and #HPR contirbutor) who is a professor at one of the state universities.
Unfortunately, he’s really busy, and I don’t really have a channel to ask how things are going.

In the Eastern Pacific, Tropical storms have formed: #TropStorm Hernan and TS Iselle. Current forecasts expect the storms to turn westward and dissipate around Sunday/Monday.
In the Atlantic / Gulf of Mexico, #Hurricane #Laura is a category 4 storm, expected to bring storm surge up to 20 feet above normally-dry ground. Still expected to reach the #TX / #LA shore this evening. Still rated "extremely dangerous".
This isn't #TheWeatherChannel saying this (e.g., there's no commercial motivation). This is #NOAA / #NHC.

#NOAA / #NHC: #Hurricane #Marco is in the Gulf of Mexico. Current projections say it should weaken before it makes landfall some time tomorrow along #MS - #LA - #TX coastline.
#TropStorm #Laura is over and West of Hispaniola ( #Haiti and #DR ), expected to go over #Cuba before entering the Gulf tomorrow night / Tuesday morning and becoming a hurricane itself. Looks like it may hit near the Texas - Louisiana state border on Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

It looks like #TropStorm #Marco has moved North and East relative to yesterday’s forecast, so the new projection has it striking Southeast #LA as a hurricane on Monday 2020-08-24. TS #Laura is over and to the West of #PR. The #NOAA / #NHC forecast shows it going right over Hispaniola and Cuba (with some impacts in the Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas. Current projection shows Laura striking Louisiana as a hurricane on Wednesday 2020-08-26, two days after Marco lands.
They note in the discussion for both tropical cyclones that there is a lot of uncertainty in the forecasts, so big changes could occur between now and landfall.

To the east of that, TropStorm #Laura is bigger, but sloppy. Expected to pass near or over #PR, Hispaniola ( #DR and #Haiti), #Cuba, #Caymans, #Bahamas, then enter the Gulf of Mexico before becoming a hurricane

As always, these forecasts are based on mathematical models, and real-world situations almost always differ from models. If you're in the US Southeast or the Gulf Coast, you should take precautions as though one or both storms could change course and visit you.

My #SoCal hometown is having another day that exceeds 100F / 38C outside. Inside temperature is 96F / 36C.
Slightly hotter than some parts of Sacramento #CA, but lower than Phoenix #AZ. Some clouds rolling in, so maybe we’ll have some overcast ... or maybe even a little rain.
We have not yet had the traditional August rainstorm. (Cools things off that day, but then the next day or two return to full heat, only now they have humidity that feels akin to parts of #LA or #MS.)

I haven't been to #China, so I have no opinion on their food (except I know it differs from what we know as #Chinese_food in the US). However, I have worked in #Alabama, #Mississippi, and #Louisiana.
Overall, I was not impressed. #LA had the best food of the three, but it was usually so highly salted that I quickly went back to putting some rice, meat, and beans in a slow-cooker.
The exception was lunchtime: whenever I could make it there, I went to a particular gas station in Baton Rouge to buy lunch. Imagine Popeye's Famous Louisiana chicken, but turned up to 11! (Or maybe Popeye's took the gas station recipe and dialed it down a notch or two.) Anyway, that was good, though that much fried food is naturally unhealthy.

Atlantic: #TD7 is now #TropStorm #Gonzalo, expected to become a hurricane tomorrow. There is still something spinning up in the Gulf of Mexico, heading WNW toward #TX and #LA, but its chances of becoming a damaging storm are low.
Pacific: TropStorm #Douglas is now a #hurricane and still strengthening.
