#TD5 has formed in the Atlantic. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ #PR is in the projection cone, during the time when the storm is expected to be a hurricane.

Communication summary for this week:
Telephone calls with mom (2), 1 brother (1), #sonTwo (4), co-workers Ken (1) and Mark (1)
SMS conversations with 2 brothers, 1 sister, #sonOne, sonTwo, co-workers Ken and Mark
Online chats (text) with sonOne, sonTwo, #Daddy_A, two nephews, a couple of people from the Fediverse, #GD1 and #GD2 (plus exchanged drawings and photos with GD2); (video) with sonTwo and his family, joined by GD2
I did learn that this is important during my year in #PR, far away from all of these folks (Ken was there, but he was in another city).

I will say, this #NorCal assignment is a big improvement over working in the office from Hades (in #PR).

These housing providers (for employees of $EMPLOYER that will be in a location for a long period of time) are getting desperate. One of them is sending multiple e-mails daily to tell us they have openings in various cities around the country (and in #PR).
I get it. I think I can find your contact info if and when I’m in a position to require your services. Filling my inbox with advertising just makes it less likely that I would contact you in that situation.

I am not an #Uber fan, but during the month or two that I had no car in #PR, they were so much better than the taxi companies that it made me wonder why taxis were even still in business.
For example: only one taxi company could take me to or from the airport; if I called the wrong one, they'd make me call the other one.
The taxis always wanted cash. I was working 60+ hours per week in a foreign country, so I did not often have $30 in cash on me. If I insisted that I could only pay with my employer's credit card, they would read my card information over the radio and take about twenty minutes to get the okay for payment.
Every taxi driver would hand me a card, saying that he/she also drove independently or for another company after hours. "Call me on this number instead of going through the taxi company."
Uber usually had me at the office within 15 minutes of pickup. Taxis were always at least 20 minutes. Uber's wait for pickup was usually between 2 and 15 minutes. Taxis were always around 20 minutes.
Uber wasn't problem-free. In a few cases, I had to request fare re-evaluation because they charged an amount that $EMPLOYER would not have reimbursed. A couple of drivers took shortcut routes through shady sections of town where I wondered whether I was about to be robbed or killed. One time, a different driver showed up, the original driver showed up after we left, then called. Somehow, driver two had been able to steal driver one's fare.

Got a call from Kenny at work. He's been on medical leave since he left #PR and wanted to know whether I knew of anyone with similar symptoms. I do, but it isn't for me to share.

@kai As a former public bus system rider, and someone that briefly used #Uber to get to and from work in #PR, I'd rather the cities bought smaller buses or even vans and covered larger parts of the city for more hours of the day. With ride-hailing, drivers often have other jobs, so may be unavailable during peak demand times. And unpredictable delays in pick-ups mean that your boss has to be understanding or you'll lose your job.

Speaking of #TechTeam #Field_IT, I should download the newest revision of “Field IT Guide (Unofficial)” that the #PR branch published recently. This is a far better resource than any of $EMPLOYER’s official documents, and I’ve been sending it to our people nationwide.
This is very useful for coaching / training new folks, as well as helping old folks stay abreast of the newest procedures and equipment in the agency.

My bedroom is 59F / 15C, 19% humidity. It’s 40F / 4C, 41% outside. This is a lot warmer than places like #CO, #WY, #MI; without being too hot, like #FL and #PR.
-
You have been invited to register for [anti-discriminatory practices] training in #PR.
Sorry, I don’t think I want to spend 12 hours commuting each way for a half-day class. Besides, I’ve had the course about fifteen times already. Maybe you can find some of those HQ types that seem to be exempt from paying the price for their misdeeds and stick them in the class.
-
I think I unintentionally talked W into quitting. I’m not sorry. I think $EMPLOYER is wasting his skills and stringing him along with promises they will never fulfill.
It stinks that he’s back in #MI, where he hoped to escape, but maybe he’ll be able to work mostly remote, so he can live in #PR.

#sonOne's #PR souvenir mugs arrived yesterday. #Daddy_A's mugs arrived today. No word from #sonTwo yet, but AFAIK, the mugs I sent to #SoCal family members have not arrived yet.
-
Tillamook is one of my favorite brands of yogurt. I’m enjoying my daily #YoCo ( #yogurt and #coffee ) more in #SoCal than in #PR because I can obtain better yogurt.

The newer laptop: 12GiB of RAM, 40GiB disk. I installed #OpenSUSE Leap 42.3 before I left for #PR. I was going to upgrade in place (to the sequentially revised Leap 15.0) but ran out of space.

Long, long lines at San Juan #PR #hairport #TSA today. If you're leaving the enchanted island today, get there extra early.
-
Shipments sent. Now, #sonOne and his wife will soon have a pair of large #PR mugs. I decided to get #sonTwo and his wife a pair of large PR mugs. Because #Daddy_A is different from the other two, I decided to get him and his wife a pair of large PR mugs.
(Yes, the store had one design [in two available colors: gray/purple, gray/lightblue], so everyone got the same pair.)

Hmm I think I heard thunder afar off. Though it rains almost daily here, I don't think I've seen lightning or heard thunder in #PR except when the remnants of a tropical storm came past.
-
@1iceloops123 I think you'd have to come to San Juan #PR to find out if it really is good. Even though I'm in the San Juan metro, I'm not planning to try it before I leave.

@rye It is around +72F in #PR, but #lazyNephew says it is cold and wet in #SoCal (which isn't what a Michigan resident would call cold but we know there are weather differences between the sunbelt and the Great Lakes).
