@lxo In my opinion, Assange wasn't subject to US law. He was not a citizen and AFAIK, was not in US territory when the leaks were collected or published. Now, I could see if they pressured countries where he holds citizenship or was physically present to enforce their own laws, but I do not agree that the US should seek to prosecute him.
I don't classify him as a journalist, since he doesn't seem to publish secrets from other countries such as #Russia or #China. It seems to be mostly #USA. So it _is_ plausible to consider #Wikileaks as a non-governmental foreign intelligence service, in which case, I think every government reserves the right to strike back. So, as you can see, I'm conflicted, with my primary view being that the USA should not be pursuing Assange, but rather the leakers who served as his sources.
(As a federal employee, I'm not allowed to read anything that leaked, but from what I've seen others write, Manning was very careless about leaking, with some documents identifying undercover agents who had nothing to do with the crimes that were revealed. So this wasn't really whistleblowing, as the leaked materials covered a lot more than waste, fraud, abuse, and crime. The restrictions also make it difficult to form any kind of intelligent opinion.)

I still wonder how #Russia under #Putin, Putin and his circle, and their apologists in the South and West could ever come up with the idea that NATO and "the West" were out to "encircle" and "subdue" Russia. If you want to bring down a country, you don't first engage in economic relationships with it or make yourself dependent on it in crucial areas of #infrastructure and #energy. Assuming Putin to be a rational player – a murderous one, but still – he must have clearly seen that delivery of raw materials to the West was increasing, not decreasing Russia's security. Not even a NATO membership of Ukraine and Georgia could endanger Russia given the scale of Western dependency. Thus, the Greater Russia chimera with the corresponding conspiracy idea of the West wanting to "extinguish" Russia is the fantasy of a drama queen that cannot accept that Russia is a banal and mediocre state with little else to offer than raw materials and conflict. Putin needed to concoct interrelationships of historical, existential, and religous dimensions because he seemingly couldn't accept that after 20 years in power (various positions), his only achievement had been the creation of a mafia-state for his self-enrichment. But the country itself had become a failure, and so, irrespective of his riches, he himself. (Since 2007 I would argue.) And so he started it. A genocidal war on a sovereign neighbouring state, to ease his feelings of inferiority as man and head of state.

> From the start of the war, a military airfield and village just outside Kherson city achieved legendary status in Ukraine. Captured by Russian forces within days of Russia's full-scale invasion in February, Chornobaivka was then repeatedly attacked by Ukrainian forces.

#Ukraine: drone drops a grenade on a hole filled with #Russia soldiers; the soldiers barely react. Speculation is that they are suffering hypothermia due to lack of food, warm clothing, etc.

One of the implications of a likely Republican surge in Congress is that many of them appear to be putinoid bootlickers who will be more likely to balk at continuing to supply weapons, training, and economic assistance to #Ukraine as it struggles to dislodge the invaders from #Russia.
As anyone who has thought about the past few decades of Russian invasions should notice, the only way to be sure this doesn't recur is to defeat them so soundly that it spurs internal political change.
This happened when #Afghanistan militias, armed with US-supplied weapons, sent the USSR scurrying home with its tail between its legs.
If we stay the course, Russia may be transformed into a good citizen on the world stage.

#Chechnya leader: #RU conscripts should not complain about the old, outdated weapons they've been issued; instead, take better weapons from #UA troops
What? You're personally seeing that #Russia's endemic cronyism and corruption could put the national future at risk and instead of railing against the oligarchs who stole the improvement and replacement funds, you're blaming it on people that are being forced to use the weapons that were slated for replacement?

More rumors about #Putin's health.
While the rumors might provide an explanation for the timing of going from a smoldering proxy war in the #Donbass to attempting to extinguish #Ukraine's independent statehood, one can look back and see that some of the ideas that led this way were already prominent in 2014 and possibly earlier. One can also see that even if #Russia's leader was to pass away from a fatal disease, the war would likely continue, because the ideas and circumstances leading in that direction would still be widespread among national leadership as well as the nation's people themselves.
