Nine Central and Eastern European countries voiced support for #Ukraine’s application for #NATO membership after #Russia moved to annex captured territory. https://nu.federati.net/url/288004 [apnews com]

I have suspected from the moment of 2022 #Russia’s invasion of #Ukraine 🇺🇦 that it will eventually end up with NATO and Russia’s 🇷🇺 alliance actually shooting at each other. Their annexation of Ukrainian territory seems to confirm this.

Now that he's a citizen of #Russia, I guess he can place his national loyalties there. In other words, he has little reason to hold back on revelations of what he observed inside the US government's security apparatus, even things that were not illegal / unconstitutional ... but still classified or at least non-public.
Personally, I think that his revelations of unconstitutional data collection, routinely spying on ordinary citizens without even a "reasonable suspicion" with which to seek a warrant, should have been met with an offer of pardon ... which should have been conditional upon him testifying before Congress about what he observed. There was no reason for him to be forced to remain in Russia all these years, subject to whatever Putin's security apparatus demands.
"Well what if he was really a Russian spy?"
It would not have been necessary to give him the same job he had before and access to the same types of information that he had before.

@geniusmusing While I’m glad to see a little opposition arising in #Russia, I think #Putin has put himself in a win-or-die situation in #Ukraine.

#Ukraine success destroys #Russia claim to be a superpower https://nu.federati.net/url/287841
I think nuclear weapons and the willingness to use them / threaten to use them is currently the main thing that makes one nation "a superpower". Otherwise, the Taliban would be the superpower (having driven both the USSR and USA out of Afghanistan within the past 40 years).
Yes, I am aware that by that definition, North Korea is a superpower.
Having a significantly better and bigger conventional military than most other nations has to count for something. Until that military is tested in battle, one does not know how well or how poorly it will perform, but one already knows that nukes can bring unprecedented devastation ... and that nearly everyone gives nuclear-armed nations some leeway.
(In the case of Russia, I suspect their corruption problems are a big contributor to their poor battlefield performance, as is their top-down authoritarian organization.)

Now that #Ukraine has gained the initiative in #Russia's invasion, Vladimir #Putin may face new pressure. Expect him to try to find a new place to exert pressure and attempt to cut US and Western European backing.

#Ukraine forces retook around 6 000 km2 from #Russia in September, including most of Kharkiv Oblast. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62884668 [www bbc com] Russian forces are in retreat in the area, and have lost important logistics hubs, including some that supply rebellious Donetsk and Luhansk areas.
The advances in the East have been fairly rapid. Two days ago, the reported recaptured territory was only 2 000 km2.
