#SoCal #Amazon warehouse workers walk out over excessive heat, low pay

Temperatures in the !SoCal deserts ( High Desert and Intermediate Desert / Mojave Desert and Amargosa Valley Desert and Great Basin Desert; Low Desert / Colorado Desert, Sonora Desert ) and the valleys of the #Inland_Empire above 100β°F Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
In #NorCal, a co-worker says Sacramento is up to 106β°F this week.
This is #too_hot, even without humidity.

I ordered something from #Amazon. While I was still in #NYC, they claimed it had been delivered.
When I got back to #SoCal, it wasn't here. A few days later, I got an e-mail telling me that it was refunded.
If it wasn't delivered, why say it was?

Booked my flight to #sonTwo's place. Since I'm staying for at least a month (possibly six or seven weeks, depending on the situation in #MO and #SoCal), I went with a one-way ticket.
#GS4 still thinks I live in the computer screen. #GS3 has seen me in person, but that was half his life ago.
Because I was in #NYC so long, this trip is later than expected. Thus, because of school schedules, I cannot be sure that I will get to visit the older grandchildren during this trip.

Flash flood warnings issued for parts of #San_Bernardino and #Riverside Counties. #NOAA / #NWS advises to stay off the roads unless evacuating, as many roads could have dips with life threatening waterflows. Heavy rain occurring in spots.

California's Governor Newsom makes cautious step toward meeting the state's water needs. https://nu.federati.net/url/287349 [www latimes com]
It is a tiny step, but #California is never going to catch up with its demand with these baby steps. There needs to be a massive statewide effort to meet 100% of projected water requirements for the next fifty years via #desalination. That includes residential, agricultural, industrial, plus supplementing natural rainfall to preserve forests and replenish ground water, and some extra water which can be made available for neighboring states' needs.
I feel like these #pollies are so busy trying not to displease entrenched interests that they are missing a historic opportunity to lead the way in responding to a 22 year drought that currently affects a giant chunk of the US from California to Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, and beyond. See https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/ and https://www.drought.gov/

Flash flood warning in parts of #SoCal #San_Bernardino and #Inyo counties and #Nevada #Clark county expected for the next three hours. #NOAA / #NWS alerting. #t-storms producing heavy rain in normally dry areas, including Pahrump, Jean, Primm, Mountain Pass, #I-15.

#noaa / #nws issuing flash flood watch alerts for !SoCal mountains and deserts beginning at noon Pacific and continuing until evening. Scattered #t-stroms with heavy rain.

Flew in late last night. So far, even though !SoCal is probably warmer, the lack of humidty makrs it more bearable. Plus, my shirt is not soaked through.

#PNW temperatures as high as 111β°F / 44β°C. That is really hot, even for the #SoCal desert.
@geniusmusing stay cool.

When you see how quickly rents are rising in a rent controlled part of #SoCal, you can imagine that rents in other portions may be rising even faster. Family is having to look at places nearly 30 miles further out (which is causing stress and fights ... some of those places really don't have anything to offer except a building to live in).

One of my sisters is still friends with someone she knew in high school. The friend's adult son was visiting his parents, went for a walk in a field nearby and collapsed. By the time anyone found him, he was long dead.
The only person in said family whom I have ever met is my sister's friend, and that was when she was in high school. It doesn't affect me at all, but I did notice the local news sites this week have several "dead body found in field" stories. I didn't look at the temperatures in that part of #SoCal, so it is possible that weather is contributing.

Several #California cities, including some in !SoCal cancelling their #Independence_Day fireworks shows because their contractor got raided by the state fire marshal.

NIMBYs fighting against power lines. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/26/why-the-us-has-a-massive-power-line-problem.html
And in California, in the midst of a severe water shortage, NIMBYs are fighting against ocean water desal plants.

Some time in the next week or so, I intend to buy a Chromebook ( which means I must create a Google account ... I doubt that ChromeOS is like Android, where I can use it for years without ever logging in with a Google account).
The electronics retail location nearby has one model on sale (clearance?) for $99. I'm trying to get my essential electronics shipped back to #SoCal, so I don't have to pull out so many devices at the #TSA checkpoint when I'm on my way back.

The wind turbines in #SoCal that were installed in the late 1970s were left in place until they failed. Last time I drove past the Bakersfield area and the Palm Springs area, both of them still had ancient wind turbines, most of which were no longer working. A number of them had caught fire. Some had broken blades. I think one or two had broken support towers, and some seem to have dropped their propellers entirely.
I suspect it had to do with the way the US financed their operation (tax breaks such as accelerated depreciation; with legally mandated higher pricing paid by utilities for renewable energy). When the higher pricing rules went away and the depreciation was finished, they weren't profitable enough to invest in maintenance and replacement.

#NYC seems a lot more willing to block off a street for an event than most #SoCal cities. Today, a church had a festival. The street was barricaded and the street was filled with music and dining. Both the #USA flag and the #Greece flag were being flown.

@clacke
> A Supreme Court that doesn't give a damn what the public wants ... is exactly what a Supreme Court is for, actually.
I agree.
> the reason there is partisan court seat stacking etc is that the SCOTUS cares too much what the people or rather what the people's representatives think.
I disagree. It is that absent support for the ruling party's "correct" interpretations, a court nominee will not be confirmed.
> It's the politicization of everything.
Correct. And, as we know, politics ruins everything it touches.
> the US appoints some of its District Attorneys by popular vote and that's just super weird for a role that is supposed to be administrative, meritocratic, bureaucratic.
Yes, I agree. The DA role is normally at county-level, so each county that does this should reconsider, including #Los_Angeles County in #SoCal. On the other hand, one has no idea what sort of back-room deals would be made in an appointed DA situation. But overall, I think appointment would be better.

I don't know whether I responded. Yes, troubleshooting data would be useful. I'm still in #NYC, but I'm hoping to do some major updates to all !fnetworks sites when I return to #SoCal.
