Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Tuesday, 24-Sep-2019 01:19:08 UTC Ricardus My SSL 9000 pre is done. Really happy with the whole thing. Can't wait to use this and build more.
I already swapped out the nuts on the pot shafts for small ones, and painted them gold. Looks awesome. Don't have a pic of that but I will.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Tuesday, 17-Sep-2019 02:26:45 UTC Ricardus Seems like an important tip to put into the calibration instructions, so you don't assault your ears and studio monitors with 78 dB of sawtooth wave at 40 hz. Imagine if you had the control room volume really high when you engaged the filter.
Anyway, seems like adding this sentence to the instructions would be useful:
"BEWARE! When you engage the HPF for calibration the unit will be putting out 76 dB of sawtooth wave at about 40 Hz."

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Tuesday, 17-Sep-2019 02:26:33 UTC Ricardus So it turns out my SSL 9000 preamp was fine, and not partly bad like I thought. When I fired it up, everything worked fine, but when I engaged the HPF it started outputting a massive amount of low frequency noise, and the noise changed frequency when you turned the main HPF pot.
Turns out the calibration procedure starts with the circuit oscillating, and you fine tune it with another pot.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Saturday, 14-Sep-2019 03:31:24 UTC Ricardus Both boards are now done on the SSL 9000 Preamp build. Here you can see the daughter board as well, which is for the LED VU meter. I can't solder the LEDs until I get the front panel in and I can measure things.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Thursday, 12-Sep-2019 03:45:16 UTC Ricardus Very close to done now on this build. All I need to do is solder the replacement capacitors that are on order, install some LEDs on this board, and on the daughter board (not shown) that contains the LED VU meter.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Sep-2019 23:05:24 UTC Ricardus Even more progress on the SSL 9K board. Ordered some wrong caps. No idea how that happened, but correct ones are on the way.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Saturday, 31-Aug-2019 15:30:48 UTC Ricardus My PCBs for the SSL Preamp build haven't arrived from Denmark yet. Ordered on 8/18. Usually things from Europe don't take this long. Finger crossed they didn't get lost.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Saturday, 17-Aug-2019 04:44:25 UTC Ricardus I got some of these russian LM394 clones in, called AS394s. I didn't notice until moments ago that they have 8 leads instead of 6.
See datasheet. Pins 1 and 5 do nothing.
https://www.ericasynths.lv/media/as394ch.pdf
So why even manufacture them with 8 leads when every other equivalent of this device has SIX leads? Makes extra work. Poor saps like me gotta clip leads off.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Friday, 16-Aug-2019 21:42:21 UTC Ricardus Unobtainium Pots obtained for the SSL Preamp build. As far as I know there's only one supplier in the world for these. I may be crazy but I think the shafts are a tad long. But that's why Dremels were invented. Shown here with knobs provided from a friend. He knows who he is.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2019 20:32:25 UTC Ricardus Started building the BOM for the SSL 9000 preamps. Halfway done. It still boggles my mind that some semiconductors from a 30 year old design can be out of production and hard to find.
