I logged into #Twitter after almost two years. Just over 1800 tweets, so I deleted one page of them. Now it says "Send your first Tweet
We've got your first Tweet ready to go. The hashtag \#myfirstTweet will help others find and chat with you." -

@dragnucs What I mean is they use the same APIs and AP protocol, and attract pretty much the same people (those who will even consider using the #Fediverse instead of [or in addition to] #Corpocentric #Lockiverse platforms like #Facebook, #Instagram, #Twitter). -

!fnetworks On the main (Nu) instance, maximum post size has been raised from 1164 characters (1000 + #Twitter's old 140) to 4096 characters. There may be some tweaking and adjusting over the next couple of weeks. -

"... what happened recently with ... trending hashtags ..." (see @dansup's post about 4 hours ago)
.
I don't know what happened with #Twitter trending #hashtags, but their way of listing what is trending is of limited utility anyway. If it becomes "important", groups will conspire to post and repeat posts using the same tag in a short time period and sites may filter / censor which tags make the list. -

I'm sure EvanPro has given up by now. I just haven't felt like logging into #Twitter to approve his follow request. -

Using #Qvitter on QSE helped motivate me to get a self-run instance going again. It tries to replicate what #Twitter did around the same time, but it seemed to follow the things T did wrong even more than the things T did right.
GS' traditional UI may be old, but it doesn't have a lot of sudden or unexpected motions nor does it have many functions that you have to switch interfaces to perform. -

@moonman #Twitter is using 29 zillion dollars to support all their servers. If you had those same resources, you could make all your sites faster than theirs. -

@bthall Oh, cool. Welcome to the #Fediverse, @freakboy3742. You're not just on Mastodon\.social. There are other sites running the #Mastodon software and sites running other software ( #GNU_Social, #Pleroma, #Friendica, #Hubzilla) that are also part of this network.
Most people are not obsessed with #Twitter (and we don't all use the #Birdsite nickname). If you watch some tags for the types of content you're looking for, chances are you'll find more of it, though maybe less than you see on Twitter. Smaller network, fewer people, less content. -

I'll have to log into #Twitter today. I have a subscription request from EvanPro. It honestly seems like a waste to approve it, since (1) I haven't logged in for months, and (2) most of what I do when I do log in is delete old tweets.
Also, despite my account being "private", there are a lot of inactive suspected marketing bots that subbed before I closed off subs. It feels weird to post in a supposedly restricted environment where they are potentially listening. -

Whatchutalkinbout Willis? #GNU_Social has supported federated polls since the #StatusNet days, and long before #Twitter added it. (I don't think Qvitter supports polls, but there are other reasons to avoid it already.) -

They sure wouldn't have this problem if their apps worked with Mastodon.
"After June 19th, 2018, 'streaming services' at #Twitter will be removed. This means two things for third-party apps:
Push notifications will no longer arrive
Timelines won’t refresh automaticallyIf you use an app like Talon, Tweetbot, Tweetings, or Twitterrific, there is no way for its developer to fix these issues."

@Gargron This is awesome, and I'll be sharing it widely. But, I also think now is the time to start talking about how we stop the likes of #CambridgeAnalytica / #Palantir from abusing the Fediverse's model, too. I work for scrapinghub.com - I can see how easy it would be to map and monitor the entire fediverse right now. From there to hyper-targeted fake profiles is a small enough step. How do we harden ourselves against #Twitter / #Facebook-style manipulation without damaging the social fabric?

*Twitter is not a public utility* by @Gargron
"Isn’t it a bit strange that the entire world has to wait on the CEO of #Twitter to come around on what constitutes healthy discourse? I am not talking about it being too little, too late. Rather, my issue is with “instant, public, global messaging and conversation” being entirely dependent on one single privately held company’s whims. Perhaps they want to go in the right direction right now for once, but who’s to say …"

@infernalturtle Based on what happened with #AppDotNet, I doubt #Twitter can get enough paid subscriptions to support their extensive infrastructure. They blew it when they kept crawling to VCs for funding instead of talking federating with Identica, Pownce, Jaiku and so on to spread the cost. Then they sealed their doom when they chose ad-based funding and restricting API access to easily clonable apps (like Klout) instead of usage fees (such as fee-based API access or pay X per month, Y per year). -

Or more specifically, when those VCs pushed them to adopt an ad-based model and then IPO. -

@Gargron #Twitter became evil when its growth necessitated massive investments by venture finance type organizations. The challenge of growth for the #fediverse is going to be trying to spread users over more instances and keeping those instances smaller, instead of having most of them clump together in a few larger instances.
At large enough scale, the larger instances will face exactly the same pressures and choices that Twitter faced. There won't be enough #Patreon funders to sustain that. -
