#Win10 woke up, downloaded and installed updates, started beeping at me because it wanted to reboot.
What an annoying way to awaken in the morning.

@geniusmusing Maybe it will give PHBs a push toward #Ubuntu and #Suse to replace #Win10 on the desktop.

Now watching some #PHP videos on the former #Lynda.com site ( now called #LinkedIn / #LockedOut Learning ) before I go back to the #Lua videos.
I had to take a time out from Lua because none of the (book and video) examples of "first class functions ... pass the function to that one" were working for me and I could not see why.
The odd thing is that the weird issues with scoping that I saw the past few days are gone today. Lua 5.1.5 on #Win10 1909 and Lua 5.2.4 on #Kubuntu 18.04, #Linux kernel 4.15

@amic If it wasn't #Win10, I might agree.

Open lid on #Win10 laptop.
"Windows Module Installer" immediately takes 100% of disk I/O.

Turns out that both #Erlang_OTP and #Elixir are available through #Chocolatey. I've started uninstalling things that I installed directly in #Win10 if I can replace it with a version through Chocolatey. Just getting all my (non-OS) updates through that system is worth it. One of the things I've long hated in Windows is logging into an account with admin rights and getting dozens of notifications that program X, program Y, program Z all need updates.
(For the record, I don't use the Microsoft/Windows store, so I cannot tell whether that would have a similar effect, assuming that it contains the software that I'd want.)

@dwaltiz @moonman I don't see that ending well. Even brand new computers with #Win10 minimum requirements are a mistake.
I bought one in PR because I needed a Windows machine for tax-filing purposes. I went to run Windows Updates and right out of the box it said I need to plug in extra storage before it can install updates. 32Gig eMMC was already filled.

https://thehackernews.com/2020/01/warning-quickly-patch-new-critical.html Emergency #security patch for #Win10. Update #Windows today!

Doing another "LinkedIn Learning, formerly Lynda.com" #PowerShell course. This one is actually interesting and informative. But since I don't touch the company #Win10 machine very often, I'm not actually practicing what it covers.

@amic What did you do? Install #PulseAudio in #Win10?

#Win10 IoT has been around for a while.

I was recently in the electronics section of a couple of retailers. The sub $500 laptops almost all run on 32GB eMMCs, which means #Win10 will have trouble installing updates. I still think it is crazy to pay $3,000 to browse the Web and watch Netflix.

@sean @xj9 That honestly sounds much like what I sometimes see supporting only #Win10 users in an enterprise environment (so no games, almost no Macs, no Linux; no X, no GNOME, no KDE).

#lazyNephew is struggling with the Elgato HD60 Pro driver conflict versus #Win10 v.1809
I’m not helping him with it. I figure he can use a search engine just like I would.

@kai In my experience, with any low-spec machine, Windows is just the wrong choice. I bought a mini-laptop (basically a netbook) with #Win10, turned it on, started #WinUpdate, and got “Not enough space to install updates”.

What is up with #Win10 choosing “Disconnect this display” on its own?
The assumption should be “Duplicate these displays” (to avoid objects accidentally being offscreen) until and unless the user chooses something else.

@moonman@shitposter.club One thing I noticed about $EMPLOYER’s #WinXP —> #Win7 —> #Win10 migration is that we had less control of our machines after every upgrade. Which would be very good if we went to VDI, but stinks if you have people connecting from numerous different physical and network environments and something that sounds great in HQ hinders productivity in the field.
I spent a couple of hours last night trying to talk someone through connecting, but her computer could not be connected.

@xj9 There are plenty of low-powered, low-storage computers out there. (Often 32MiB eMMC.) They often cannot even install Windows updates. They're perfect for network-only uses, especially if the #Win10 OS is replaced with something else.
.
Chromebooks are also decent netbooks if you're okay with Google.

Oh, I did not realize that #Win10 1809 is back in general release. https://nu.federati.net/url/223110 [zdnet]
