@1iceloops123 You should not make that decision based on a single HD failure. Is there a trend, where multiple Seagate drives fail in shorter time periods than similar drives from Western Digital and other producers? You may have just hit the one bad drive out of a batch of long-life drives.

@lnxw48a1 @1iceloops123 Traditionally, Seagate have a much higher failure rate than Western Digital (about 8% more of their drives fail before their given expiry).

@1iceloops123 @maiyannah I have had good experience with Toshiba drives. Until recently, I had poor experiences with WD. I've only had one Seagate so far.

@lnxw48a1 @1iceloops123 Toshiba are actually just white label Western Digital drives (a lot of OEM drives are)

What's worth noting is that there's a reason behind the different tiers at both major drive manufacturers.  The entry level stuff from most are rubbish (but the failure rate of Seagate's is quoted considerably higher as I mentioned earlier).

Both brand's enterprise offerings are fairly reliable, although I find WD at least here in Canada end up on deeper discounts.  I got a 6TB WD enterprise drive for like 80 bucks this time last year.

@1iceloops123 @lnxw48a1 For the better stuff from either manufacturer, look for WD Blacks or Reds (or Purples if they're on a good deal), or Seagate Ironwolf drives.

@1iceloops123 @lnxw48a1 And if you ever see an IBM drive in the sub-200 range grab it, those hard drives are made to never die in a lot of circumstances that they will probably never be (including being submerged in water or sand) as they were originally made for the US military.

@archaeme @1iceloops123 Strangely, $EMPLOYER's laptops all have SSDs and most of them are horribly slow, not noticeably improved over the older generation.

This seems like a good time to link to the #BackBlaze annual hard drive stats: https://www.backblaze.com/hard-drive.html https://gs.jonkman.ca/attachment/29554
