     @cognitiaclaeves Welcome! It's a huge network of networks, consisting of about half a dozen active platforms that speak a common protocol. Estimates place the population of the fediverse to potentially half a million users.

     Many individual hosts (called instances) act as their own dedicated communities and are centered around a theme, but the idea is that they can all interoperate as one supernetwork. That said, some hosts get into feuds and block each other.
