5:15 pm: Fed cuts rates to zero and launches a massive $700 billion quantitative easing program
The Federal Reserve, saying "the coronavirus outbreak has harmed communities and disrupted economic activity in many countries, including the United States," cut interest rates to near-zero on Sunday and launched a massive $700 billion quantitative easing program to shelter the economy from the effects of the virus.
Facing highly disrupted financial markets, the Fed also slashed the rate of emergency lending at the discount window for banks by 125 bps to 0.25%, and lengthened the term of loans to 90 days.
The new fed funds rate, used as a benchmark both for short-term lending for financial institutions and as a peg to many consume rates, will now be targeted at 0%-0.25%. —Steve Liesman

My county has its first #2019-nCoV / #COVID-19 case, someone who had travelled overseas recently. In my local area, all school districts are shut down until the end of March or beginning of April, but I do not know about other parts of this county.

It isn't likely to happen, but $EMPLOYER should put all of us that are not on assignments onto WFH and assign us to support other federal agencies that are working to contain and control the #COVID-19 outbreak. I'm not at all sure what we could offer (since most of us are definitely non-medical)
Which reminds me: I need to go out into the garage and see whether there's an old unused computer that can be pressed into service with #BOINC and #Folding_at_Home. I know that hackers.town has a team on F@H trying to find molecules that could become part of a vaccine for COVID-19 / #2019-nCoV. ( I'd love to get back into #SETI_at_Home, but I've heard they suspended the project while they catch up with the work-units submitted by participants over the years. )

#Daddy_A's wife is on "work from home" due to #COVID-19 related shutdowns.
#sonTwo's employer is on a two-week shutdown. The company is continuing to pay them, but might not be able to continue beyond that.
#sonOne's employer put all office and data center employees on WFH.
My mom's community groups: so far, one has discontinued all meetings until May. Still waiting to hear from the others (I'm trying to convince her not to attend no matter what they do).

Discussed work stuff, his upcoming vacation (that could be cancelled if there are travel restrictions), his mom and girlfriend, and ... #COVID-19 and how it could affect things. Mark's a cool guy, but he struggles mightily with making decisions.

Why are so many Baby Boomers in denial over #coronavirus?
https://www.vogue.com/article/coronavirus-baby-boomers-at-risk [www vogue com]
I don't know, but the oldest Boomers are turning 74 this year. A (real) Baby Boomer is a person born between 1946 (turns 74 in 2020) and 1964 (turns 56 in 2020). Some of the people mentioned in the article are older than 74, so they are not Boomers.
I'm having some frustrating conversations right now with thirty-somethings over self-isolation. "It's not any worse than the flu. 50,000 people have died of flu in the US this year versus 6,000 globally for coronavirus." That 50K is out of 50M that were infected. #COVID-19 has only infected about 1/8 of a million that we know of, so 1/400 the infections, 1/9 the deaths. What's that, about 44 times more deadly than the flu?
"I'm only in my thirties. I have nothing to worry about." I'm not saying to worry. I'm saying to take some precautions, so they have time to develop working vaccines before you get sick and spread it to someone else. Look: do you have asthma? Diabetes? High blood pressure or heart disease? Have you already had pneumonia in the past? Are you a current or former smoker? Maybe you need to pay attention.

7:54 pm: Georgia becomes second state to delay presidential primary
Georgia will delay its presidential primary scheduled for next week over concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Democratic Committee confirmed to CNBC.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Saturday said he was declaring a public health state of emergency in response to a growing number of coronavirus cases. He also encouraged faith-based organizations and similar entities to consider canceling public events and services
The state will now hold its presidential primary on May 19 instead of March 24.
Georgia's decision follows a similar move by Louisiana, which announced Friday it will push back its presidential nominating contests planned for April 4 to June 20.

I know some of you were hoping, but no. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/14/trump-tests-negative-for-coronavirus-white-house-doctor-says.html [cnbc] #Trump does not have #COVID-19.

There are no known cases of #COVID-19 / #2019-nCoV in my county, but all of the local school districts are taking a two week break. I don’t know when they had scheduled “Spring break”, but maybe this wraps around that.

I don’t think I’m going to try again to view $EMPLOYER’s webinar on what to do about #COVID-19. If they call me for an assignment, they can make the information available when I arrive at the work site. I’ll read it when I’m on the clock and respond appropriately.

Locally, the “forward moving city” is turning its #COVID-19 emergency plan into a fundraiser. If you knew that city’s many activities, you would not be surprised. LOL.

#COVID-19 / #2019-nCoV likely far less lethal than we think.

Now the hotel chains and car rental companies are letting me know that they are doing their part to lessen the spread of #COVID-19. But listen, I'm conserving toilet paper, so keep this "stuff" to yourself.

#San_Bernardino County bans gatherings of 250 or more people; no cases of #COVID-19 / #2019-nCoV yet, but nearby counties have some. I have not seen a similar announcement from #Riverside County, which has at least three cases already. !SoCal

Hmm. $EMPLOYER is having two #COVID-19 webinars today, one for employees and one for supervisors.

Me: "Have an emergency fund."
Thanks, y'all. I'm sure the part of the country that is living on below median incomes all have massive sums of money in the bank. The reason being off-work for an extended time period due to #COVID-19 / #2019-nCoV could be financially crushing is because they'll lack income, but bills will continue.
(This is CNBC, which has lots of financial coverage, so perhaps its audience consists almost entirely of people who make enough money to have such large emergency funds.)
----------
11:50 am: For some, missing work could be financially 'crushing'
As fears about the coronavirus mount, so do concerns about possible quarantines, office closures, and school shutdowns. If you get paid time off from your employer or you can work from home, you shouldn't have much of a financial issue unless you use up all of your days. If you are sick, you could apply for short-term disability if you are out long enough. Some employers may already have an emergency leave policy, especially if they are used to dealing with things like snowstorms and hurricanes, said Rich Fuerstenberg, a senior partner at the consulting firm Mercer. Check with your employer, since that policy isn't a guarantee. The most important thing is to have an emergency fund so that you can help cover your expenses for the next month or so, especially if you aren't going to be getting paid. —Fox

Everyone I know has runny noses, coughing, sneezing. How would we know if we were to be exposed to #COVID-19 (or even #Influenza A #H1N1)?
