Me: This is idiotic. If you're dealing with an outbreak that affects a specific group more than others and you have the chance to issue advice that will help save people's lives, DO IT!

4:36 pm: White House overruled CDC, official says, did not warn older Americans against flying
The White House overruled health officials who wanted to recommend that elderly and physically fragile Americans be advised not to fly on commercial airlines because of the new coronavirus, a federal official told The Associated Press.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention submitted the plan as a way of trying to control the virus, but White House officials ordered the air travel recommendation be removed, said the official who had direct knowledge of the plan. Trump administration officials have since suggested certain people should consider not traveling, but have stopped short of the stronger guidance sought by the CDC.

Got an e-mail from $EMPLOYER saying that the agency's "high cleaning standards" should be enough to prevent hard surface contamination from spreading #COVID-19 / #2019-nCoV, and therefore there is no need for employees to bring chlorine bleach or similar disinfectants to work.
Judging by the overcrowding and disorder that characterizes field offices and the work quality of contracted cleaning crews, I'd call that one a misstatement.

WHO: #COVID-19 / #2019-nCoV mortality rate higher than previously estimated. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/03/coronavirus-latest-updates-outbreak.html [cnbc com]
"The mortality rate of COVID-19 is significantly higher than previous estimates, world health officials said. Globally, about 3.4% of confirmed patients have died, said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization. In comparison, the seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected. The WHO officials said last week that the mortality rate of COVID-19 can differ, ranging from 0.7% to up to 4%, depending on the quality of the health-care system where it's treated. Early in the outbreak, scientists had concluded the death rate was around 2.3%. —Lovelace, Higgins-Dunn"

I should add that even though $EMPLOYER is a non-medical agency, there’s some expectation that the agency will be called to assist with response to the #COVID-19 / #2019-nCoV outbreak.
Maybe I’ll learn how to put on a hazmat suit and spray people with disinfectant.

@mangeurdenuage I think one of the early #conspiracy_theories about #COVID-19 / #2019-nCoV is that the Wuhan virus research center accidentally released it, and that was why they were able to gene-print it so quickly.
At this point, I think the priority should be finding ways to stop it's spread of destruction (e.g., vaccines). It was clearly already outside the boundaries of the quarantines before any of them were put into place, so that tactic is a failure.

@strypey From what I've seen, the distinguishing feature of the #COVID-19 outbreak versus other #coronavirus outbreaks ( #SARS, #MERS ) is its transmissibility by people that are asymptomatic & pre-symptomatic. I'd also guess that the fatality rate is lower than what we think, because mild infections ==> no medical involvement.

5:37 pm: Twitter halts all non-critical business travel and events
Twitter has joined a growing list of companies that have suspended business travel and events amid concerns about the spreading coronavirus outbreak.
The social media company said it has halted non-critical travel effective immediately until the World Health Organization or the Centers for Disease Control clear companies to step back from pandemic precautionary measures, or when a coronavirus vaccine becomes available.
"Our goal is to reduce the risk that anyone at Twitter might contract or inadvertently spread the virus," said Jennifer Christie, head of human resources at Twitter. "It is important that we take these proactive steps to protect ourselves and others and minimize the spread of COVID-19." -- Kimball
5:26 pm: France's Louvre Museum closed
The spreading coronavirus epidemic shut down France's Louvre Museum on Sunday, with workers who guard its famous trove of artworks fearful of being contaminated by the museum's flow of tourists from around the world.
Almost three-quarters of the Louvre's 9.6 million visitors last year came from abroad. The world's most popular museum welcomes tens of thousands of fans daily in Paris.
"We are very worried because we have visitors from everywhere," said Andre Sacristin, a Louvre employee and union representative.
"The risk is very, very, very great," he said in a phone interview. While there are no known virus infections among the museum's 2,300 workers, "it's only a question of time," he said.
A short statement from the Louvre said a staff meeting about virus prevention efforts stopped the museum from opening as scheduled Sunday morning. -- Associated Press

6:20 pm: Coronavirus could turn the 2020 presidential campaign upside down
Should the virus continue to spread, it may become impossible for the Democratic presidential campaigns to avoid changing their event schedules. As companies cancel events and limit travel in the name of caution, candidates are taking a risk by carrying on as normal.
"I think we'll see, pretty soon, decisions by the campaigns to limit rope line and scale back events to small-town halls and use technology like streaming to reach voters," said Scott Gottlieb, former head of the Food and Drug Administration under Trump.
"Even if the risk doesn't merit these steps right now, it's important they consider the examples they set." -- Hirsch [3]

12:12 pm: A dog in Hong Kong tests positive for the coronavirus, WHO confirms
A dog in Hong Kong has tested positive for the coronavirus that's killed at least 2,859 humans across the world over the last two months, World Health Organization officials said Friday. Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, the technical lead of WHO's emergencies program, said that the canine tested "weakly positive," meaning low levels of the virus were found in test results. Hong Kong scientists aren't sure if the dog is actually infected or if it picked up the virus from a contaminated surface, she said, adding that it is working with local authorities and scientists who tested the animal. —Higgins-Dunn

> 5:25 pm: US CDC chief says aggressively evaluating whether coronavirus survives on surfaces
> Robert Redfield, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told the U.S. Congress on Thursday that his agency is aggressively evaluating how long coronavirus can survive and be infectious on surfaces. "On copper and steel its pretty typical, it's pretty much about 2 hours," Redfield said at a House of Representatives hearing on the government response to the fast-spreading virus. "But I will say on other surfaces — cardboard or plastic — it's longer, and so we are looking at this." He said infections contracted from surfaces rather than through the air could have contributed to the outbreak on the Diamond Princess cruise ship. —Reuters

7:10 pm: Iran's health ministry confirms 245 coronavirus cases; death toll at 26
Iran's health ministry has confirmed 106 additional cases of the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections up to 245.
Iran's death toll as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak has also been raised to 26, Kianoush Jahanpour, a spokesperson for the Islamic Republic's health ministry, said Thursday.
Iran is at the epicenter of the outbreak in the Middle East, having recorded the highest number of coronavirus fatalities outside China.
Health authorities from Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman and the United Arab Emirates have all reported cases of the coronavirus that stemmed from Iran.
Earlier on Thursday, Saudi Arabia announced it would temporarily suspend the entry of foreigners for pilgrimage and tourism purposes. (See 1:57 p.m. update). — Sam Meredith

3:52 pm: US health officials say human trials on coronavirus vaccine to start in 6 weeks
Human trials testing a potential vaccine for the COVID-19 coronavirus are expected to begin in six weeks, U.S. health officials announced Tuesday. "We are on time at least and maybe even a little bit better," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, told reporters at a press conference. "Hopefully, no further glitches." The White House reportedly asked Congress on Monday for $1.25 billion in additional funding to bolster its coronavirus response, including money to develop a vaccine and therapeutics to treat the virus. 3:49 pm: US health officials say coronavirus will likely cause a global pandemic
The coronavirus outbreak that's shuttered commerce across China will likely become a global pandemic, a top U.S. health official said, adding that it's just a matter of time before the outbreak starts spreading in the U.S. "Current global circumstances suggest it's likely this virus will cause a pandemic," Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told reporters at a news briefing. "It's not so much a question of if this will happen any more, but rather more a question of when this will happen and how many people in this country will become infected and how many of those will develop severe or more complicated disease," she added. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar added: "We can't hermetically seal off the United States." Azar confirmed four new cases of the virus from repatriated cruise ship passengers, bringing the total in the U.S. to 57. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/02/25/coronavirus-latest-updates.html [cnbc]
