Oooh. So a talented craftsman friend of mine is going to make me some custom drawstring bags for a few of my mics, including the 87 clones. Can't wait to see them! I'll post pics when I get them. It could be a while. He's not known for his... speed. ;-)

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Friday, 08-Feb-2019 22:28:20 UTC Ricardus Just made the template to cut the foam for the mics. Won't actually cut it til the shock mounts get here and I can do a nice layout steeped in Feng shui. #D87Build

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Tuesday, 05-Feb-2019 22:22:43 UTC Ricardus I went to Harbor Freight to check out their Apache cases. Looks like the 3800 will do the trick. Good price. On sale even. But I hate cubed foam. Guess I'll have to live with it. #D87Build

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Monday, 04-Feb-2019 22:42:02 UTC Ricardus OK, the U87 clone build is almost complete. The capsule issue I was having is resolved, and it ended up being some sort of fluke. I got it back in the mail, today, and installed it, and it works fine. That mic seemed a little quieter (maybe 2 dB) but that's not uncommon in U87 style mics due to inconsistencies in the FETs. Because OCD I swapped out the FET with another and got lucky. Sounds the same to me now. Next pic will be a glamour shot with shock mounts and road cases!

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Saturday, 02-Feb-2019 16:38:18 UTC Ricardus Well, after about 48 hours of not being scanned, the pkg with the capsule has been found, and should be delivered Monday, 2 days late. Better late than never, I guess. #D87Build

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Friday, 01-Feb-2019 17:55:39 UTC Ricardus The capsule was supposed to get here today for the mic that was having figure-8 issues. Mail came. No capsule. I guess the cold weather could have slowed it down, but what really worries me, is the fact that the pkg hasn't been scanned in 36 hours. #D87Build

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Thursday, 31-Jan-2019 21:56:45 UTC Ricardus So I was watching a video on the tube of you last night, and saw this guy doing an Aston Spirit tear down, and I got a great idea. Look at the pic. They put a small piece of felt over the toggle of the switch to cover the larger holes in the mic body. Simple but effective. I went out and grabbed some felt and did this to mine D87's. Looks great

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Monday, 28-Jan-2019 22:24:38 UTC Ricardus OK, so the capsule I checked, and was convinced had problems made it to the manufacturer, and he told me that he could find no continuity between the backplates. I saw it there. This isn't the first time I've used a DMM to check continuity. So I went and performed the same check on the working mic and saw no continuity, as expected. I know the manufacturer is a stand up guy. He's not out to cheat anyone. Am I losing my fucking mind??!

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Monday, 28-Jan-2019 04:25:33 UTC Ricardus After that I'm going to check out some of the Pelican clone cases that Harbor Freight sells. They're actually pretty nice, and the price is right. They'll work fine.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Monday, 28-Jan-2019 04:22:41 UTC Ricardus Next I have to order some shock mounts for the 87's. Can't decide if I should buy the cheaper imported ones (still waiting on a quote, shipping from the UK) or the more expensive and high quality imported ones (shipping from the US), which are $95 a pop.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Sunday, 27-Jan-2019 21:29:50 UTC Ricardus The capsule replacement should be here Thur of Fri. Then once my tax returns get here I need to get some shock mounts. Then I'll be ready to rock. #D87Build

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Sunday, 27-Jan-2019 00:46:50 UTC Ricardus I checked every joint with a magnifying glass. I used a heat sync when soldering parts that could be affected by heat, and I cleaned the boards to get flux off about a thousand times. Not that I couldn't have made an error, but with that amount of care, Occam's Razor should have pointed me at something I didn't do, not something I did.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Sunday, 27-Jan-2019 00:46:41 UTC Ricardus RE: Finally diagnosing the issue I had with one of the U87 clones mics I built:
What I hated about this issue was that it made me doubt myself. I thought it had to be something I did wrong during the build, despite the fact that I had never taken more time, and been more careful when building anything. I double and triple checked every component and its value before soldering.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Friday, 25-Jan-2019 22:12:11 UTC Ricardus I know this is just my OCD but I can't wait to get the new capsule and "finish" this build to put closure on it. Loose ends drive me crazy!

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Friday, 25-Jan-2019 21:36:25 UTC Ricardus Well, after a week of fumbling I found the issue with figure 8 mode in my U87 clone. Looks like I have continuity between the backplates, and I'm pretty sure there isn't supposed to be any on the 87 capsule. In fact I know there isn't supposed to be. New capsule on the way.

Ricardus (ricardus)'s status on Saturday, 05-Jan-2019 03:48:42 UTC Ricardus Mic 1 worked great out of the box. I didn't get as lucky with mic 2. Omni and Cardioid work fine, figure 8 not so much. I see other people on the DIT forum having the same issue so I'm looking for for external wisdom. #D87Build
