After #Daddy_A upgraded his GPU, now he wants a newer CPU and more RAM. (And of course, he's trying to figure out how to get disks for the NAS I sent him for his birthday.)
A couple of years ago, I shipped him the parts to build a gaming PC (and a 2nd, lower spec PC for the kids). He's been gradually improving it ever since.
I also sent almost identical parts to my nephew ( #lazyNephew ), who spent a lot of time grumbling about performance, and is just now starting to plot his parts upgrade plan.
Sorry, I'm not a zillionaire. Even though I bought some pretty expensive stuff (to me ... just the GPU card costed more than pretty much any pre-assembled computer I've ever bought for myself), it wasn't top of the line "I made a million dollars streaming last year" stuff.

Added another book and three mini Thomas the Tank Engine to the list of things to ship to #Daddy_A. "The World Needs More Purple People" looks like the younger two will like it more than #Little_Boy_A (age 7) will, but I'm probably not going to buy a specific "big boy" item this time.

#coin_laundry day. Also shipped a package to #sonOne ( for #GD1 and #GD2 ) and one to #sonTwo ( for #GS3 and my granddoggy ). I may ship to #Daddy_A on Thursday.

Talked to #sonOne, #GD1, #GD2 for about an hour. #sonTwo is at work. About to call #Daddy_A.
-
#sonOne is working 10-12 hours per day, mostly remote. #sonTwo is working 16 hours per day on-site. I need to ask them both whether there is any rioting near them. I already asked #Daddy_A, but he has not answered yet.

Shared a recent Phoenix area temperature with #Daddy_A. He said the temperatures are one thing he does not miss.

When #sonTwo and #Daddy_A were in middle school, I stopped telling them to pull up their pants in public places. I started singing the "Barney" theme song as loudly as possible ... they would quickly make sure no underpants were showing. No "that's my generation's style" arguments, either.

It looks like #Daddy_A's #NAS box will arrive Saturday 2020-05-23. Assuming nothing gets placed on the wrong truck. (Someone in the Fediverse recently ordered a product from Kentucky for delivery in New Jersey. Somehow, the product got shipped to SoCal before heading back to NJ.)

#Daddy_A told me that #Little_Girl_A3 likes the book of Bible stories that I sent for her, so I got some individual stories:
* Moses
* Good Samaritan
* Joseph
They were only 99c each (guess where I found them), so I also got the same ones for her cousin #GS3.

During today's #videochat with #sonOne, we talked about network stuff (CLNS, IS-IS, OSPF, token ring, FDDI, the OSI protocol stack, TCP/IP, IPX/SPX), job-hunting, updates on #sonTwo's work status and #Daddy_A's birthday ( did I mention that "we" ordered his NAS box? ), vehicle repairs, Star Wars/Mandalorian, imported Japanese-market Transformers toys, and idiotic people whose behaviors are putting other people at risk for #COVID-19. Oh, and fried chicken places.
What did not happen:
Usually, #GD1 and #GD2 join us for 10-30 minutes; occasionally his wife joins us. Today, none of them joined.

Heard from 31 year old #Daddy_A that there are tornado warnings in the Omaha, #NE, area.
-
Got away with calling #Daddy_A by his childhood nickname in #Wire. Usually he sends a grimacing face icon in reply, but this time he did not.
-
#Daddy_A received the gifts for his kids. I didn't send clothing, so I likely will not get photos.

https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/DS220j maybe this one.
The two older boys have some professional use for the devices along with being the family Plex server. #Daddy_A does not. He’s probably going to be off for at least three more years (until #Little_Girl_A3 is in first grade), assuming the next back surgery goes well.
The DS220j is probably a step down from the DS218 model that I bought for #sonOne, but the $80 price difference might be the difference between “look what our Dad sent me” and “why am I the only one that didn’t get one?”.

https://www.amazon.com/Synology-bay-DiskStation-DS218-Diskless/dp/B077PJX8TH Wondering whether I can get #sonOne and #sonTwo to contribute toward getting this for #Daddy_A. Either way, he'll have to come up with his own HDDs / SSDs. For me, the NAS is more of an irritant than anything else, because I really only want remote storage / backup ... a network file system, not an app platform atop remote storage. But I'm one of the few who feel this way.

Saw some “Fruit Stripe Gum” (formerly made by Beech-Nut), so I bought a pack and sent it along with #Daddy_A’s shipment. I’ve probably seen it later than the #1970s, but I’d guess it has been between 20 and 35 years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHxM7tt89ns (I remember this commercial.)

Speaking of gardens, #sonOne bought strawberry plants. Strawberries ? are #GD2’s favorite food. #sonTwo planted some veggies, but I’m not sure exactly what he planted. I have something like thirty packets of seed to plant ... and I’m way behind schedule, because it is already too warm for certain plants.
( #Daddy_A talked about a garden, but I have heard nothing more about it, so I’m not sure he actually did it. )
#sonTwo and #Daddy_A were still young and at home when I first planted a garden. They did not like the “doing work” aspect of it back then.

#Daddy_A (who turns 31 this month) sent me a YouTube link ... the grandkids are (briefly) in the background of a video. I honestly can’t tell it is them, but not posting the link for privacy reasons.

Meanwhile, I'm glad I don't live in the Phoenix metro area. In Mesa, #AZ, where #Daddy_A used to live, it is currently 102F
If you don't know the Fahrenheit scale, think decimals. 0F / -18C is dangerously cold ... can kill if you are not prepared. 100F / 38C is dangerously hot ... can kill if you are not prepared. In between is a range of cold through hot, that most people survive fine. Human scale.

#Daddy_A said they have Animal Crossing, so I don't have to worry about it.
