I'm thinking about the precariousness of (looks around the #Fediverse and beyond) *all this*. I'm estimating that in under 48 hours without power, much of our food supply will be unsafe to eat. In three days, the batteries in the majority of portable electronic devices (cellular phones, tablets, smart watches, etc) will be completely discharged. By the fifth day, even most of those who were prepared will be out of resources--food, water, medicines-- and dependent on outside assistance. -

@alpacaherder I think it is important for people to know that the #Fediverse was not invented two or three years ago, and that there are / were pre-existing traditions and behavioral expectations. -

A somewhat older (2016) but still interesting article about the history of #Hubzilla. Also contains a biography of Mike Macgirvin the developer that started #Friendica, Hubzilla and #Osada. It's interesting to learn that Mike launched Mistpark, the predecessor of Friendica, before #Diaspora*.

Dear #fediverse. I work as an #architect and design buildings that harm the planet. I am looking for a practicing #engineer who can teach me building energy modelling using #opensource tools. I have a background in software dev, run #gentoo #linux and am willing to learn down to the details.
I do not have a background in heat transfer or thermodynamics, which is why I am asking for a tutor.
I promise to use this to design better buildings.

@dragnucs What I mean is they use the same APIs and AP protocol, and attract pretty much the same people (those who will even consider using the #Fediverse instead of [or in addition to] #Corpocentric #Lockiverse platforms like #Facebook, #Instagram, #Twitter). -

Certain "folk" came to the #fediverse after their centralized home was dropped again by its hoster because it allowed the kind of content they post. Then they get angry about being kicked off of various instances here. Well instead of expecting someone else to take the risk, they should host their own #federated #socnet instance or use a #P2P platform. -

#howto use the #fediverse with nearly no internet connection with #AndStatus:
Choose in the settings:
- to not fetch images
- to not fetch avatars
- increase the time of sync
Now next time you got internet connection, even if shitty as ~1kbs you can let AndStatus sync.
Also no problem if internet connection is just accessible for some minutes.
Messages get stored offline. You can read, fav., boost, and reply to them any given time. Once you've got internet again even you're replies will be sync. -

I can see where some combination of local site posts, local site faves, and posts by those on the user's subscribed list would be useful (assuming the local site isn't a megasite like Pixiv or MastoSoc), but the more that trending tags gathers from an approximation of the entirety of the #Fediverse, the less value it brings to real users. -

I’m okay with cross-posters, providing the following is true:
(1) If the original account-holder is not the one operating the cross-poster, the operator makes that clear and offers to turn it over if the original account-holder ever shows up;
(2) Filter out conversations from the other site;
(3) If the original account-holder is here, don’t treat us worse than the other site. Be present to answer responses, just as at the other site;
(4) Other than a few specific bots, non-conversational relays are undesireable.

My preference is make the #Fediverse your home and relay to the #corpocentric sites. -

@lohang I'm wary of any community centralizing on one instance. For the benefit of that community, they should disperse widely across the #fediverse. Any particular instance is vulnerable to pressure, censorship, financial conditions, admin burnout.
