Hopefully, the E2EE experience has improved now that they can store keys server-side (which could have its own negatives). *All* my former person-to-person #Matrix contacts abandoned it because of "cannot decrypt this message" warnings seen in various #Riot.im clients when reading our conversations, so I would hesitate to recommend it until I know that's fixed. -

If they released a better replacement for #Synapse tomorrow, Riot would still constrain most #Matrix use to a certain subset of techpeeps. -

I’m glad I still have “mark all as read” ... this would be a lot to scroll through. That’s why they created pastebins. -

Some public homeservers have shut down over the amount of maintenance needed and the resource consumption. That's why I can't tell any specific person they should self-host #Synapse, but the #Matrix network does need more servers and to have the network's users dispersed more widely among those servers. -

I think the best thing for the #Matrix network is for more people to #self-host. I’m not saying you or any specific person should do so, because even I don’t currently host #Synapse. -

There are other #Matrix homeservers, and this is a perfect time to disperse. -

It was just the lack of active users that caused me to close the account.
#Riot (or perhaps #Synapse; somewhere in the #Matrix ecosystem) is still too alpha to be recommendable. It is obvious that both of them are inspired by something else that I have not seen or used ( Possibly #Slack? ) which probably does all the same things.
"Use X; it is the same thing but slightly different" doesn't seem to work very well as a way of persuading people. -

No one in the #Matrix room is posting the latest 16 bit dad links. https://www.16bitdad.com/ is a blog and blatant money-making scheme where one can tell what companies sponsored each post by the topics and embedded links, but no sponsors are ever openly identified.
It is funny to read with ad-blocking turned all the way up. -

None of them ever did, so I cannot say whether Tox is useful (being that I have never actually used it). -

I did not like it either time. In the early #2010s, I encountered #SILC and learned to tolerate IRC through its descendant SILC. Like it? No, but now I can tolerate it (and that is my main use for #Matrix — a mostly always connected IRC client).
So @moonman is not alone there. -

#Matrix If you run a Synapse server, make sure it gets upgraded. -

I won't have time to do anything with it, but I should at least post a photo here and in the #Matrix retro room. -
INACTIVE (deadsuperhero)'s status on Tuesday, 16-Oct-2018 18:33:44 UTC INACTIVE So it sounds like #Riot is getting significantly more performant, at least on the web side of things.
I know some people have bashed #Matrix for its server performance and implementations, but I think with more optimizations and a fresh coat of paint, it could end up being really great.

Ask them to find an interesting room and then send you the address or invite you.
It isn't just "!XBUUlyZYEpaDVInYmy:matrix.org" that they won't understand. "#btc:matrix.org" wil likewise not be understandable.

Worse. In fact, the only way to make it worse than it is, is to give people UUIDs as their handles. They didn't just obscure user accounts, they turned room addresses into impenetrable gobbledegook as well. Like many of their decisions, I wonder WTF the #Matrix people were thinking when they made those choices.
