That's funny; I have yet to see any of these supposed next-gen blockchain solutions / cryptocurrencies (other than Bitcoin) do a single useful thing. My spam box is full of new altcoins peddling their ICOs as a sort of feverish cash grab.
Also, trying to propose blockchain technology as a solution for decentralized communications is like using a jackhammer on a nail. Completely wrong tool for the job, and grossly impractical.

I'm getting back into writing for We Distribute (several articles are in progress), and am interested in featuring different projects in the space along with the people who work on these projects.
The goal is to reveal what the landscape of federated networking looks like today, and show the different challenges and solutions that people have come up with.

There are a lot of things I love about #Mastodon, but there are a lot of things about it recently that are just killing my enthusiasm. I really didn't want to admit it to myself for the longest time, but I can't bear much more of it.
The shitposting is cancer, and there's so much of it - the GNU Social half of the fediverse actually does it pretty well, but the Mastodon half is mostly awful. Post-ironic-memes aren't funny. Slightly misspelling words intentionally doesn't mean you're part of some elaborate in-joke. The hidden content jokes are stale and everyone's using the same joke templates from Tumblr circa two years ago. On top of that, the meta-discourse and moderator drama is getting so bad that it sucks the fun out of the entire timeline.
I've met a lot of great people through Mastodon, and I think it's a great app overall. I particularly like that it works well on my phone, so that I can engage with the fediverse on the go. That's awesome!
There's just too many goddamned hipsters, and they're the worst offenders. They''re just perpetuating the worst parts of #Twitter and #Tumblr, and the political discourse on there has all of the depth of a Facebook comment thread.
I shouldn't feel this crotchety. I'm sorry.

I'm overjoyed to see that #Diaspora has made a major new release - 0.7.0.0. It always brightens my day to see a new release, and I'm glad to see that the project is making some big changes.
Important reminder to podmins: This new federation protocol is incompatible with versions of diaspora* older than 0.6.3.0. If you are still running an earlier version, your server will no longer be able to fully communicate with servers running the latest software.
There are numerous improvements that made it into this release, some of which have been in development or quite some time.
Two immediate things jump out at me:
Support for Account Migrations - this has been under investigation for quite some time, I will have to test it out when I can. New federation protocol - it's crazy to think that we'd get to this one day. I think the situation with Diaspora's federation architecture may actually be greatly improving. The whole system's been cleaned up, federation's in a gem, and now the protocol functionality is being versioned and extended.
A big shout-out to Benjamin Neff and Comrade Senya, who have dedicated themselves to a lot of grueling work in improving the federation system and adding in functionality for account migration.
I'm also really happy about the functionality improvements (mentions in comments!) and the inclusion of a formatting UI will likely make the interface a little more accessible for some people.

Yay! My app #Askwise is now up to 100 commits, and I was able to merge this feature branch: https://github.com/DeadSuperHero/askwise/issues/21
Lots of trials and tribulations, and I still have 11 issues to go. But the basic functionality is there, and I haven't given up yet!
Don't forget, it's #FreeSoftware #AGPLv3

If we admit that animals and people are on equal footing regarding sapience, or even a measured spectrum of self-awareness, empathy, and contextual-object-attachement, than we must call into question some very serious ethical problems of how human beings have treated animals for aeons.
Unfortunately, animals are largely seen as meat robots. There's a strong possibility that they're a lot more sapient than anyone realizes.
