Freedom is terrifying, in some respects. To know that you can do, say, and act how you wish, without algorithmic control, or without a central admin and singular culture deciding as arbiter what is and is not acceptable. It is an embrace of personal responsibility and liberty and many of this generation abhor personal responsibility - so they remain in the silos. They can delegate that out to the central authority and remain in their place of safety.

Anyone, no matter how marginalized, can create their own instance and connect with the network, and say whatever they wish, and the other sites on the Fediverse can react as they wish. The freedom of association always goes hand-in-hand with the freedom of speech. If you are not free to associate how you wish, then you are not free to speak how you wish. You cannot have one without the other.

@maiyannah Except that these days Twitter isn't all that safe. But I know what you mean. In the interests of having an easy life it's tempting to delegate everything, and that may even work if there is enough group affinity. Doing everything in the cloud is the ultiimate delegation of information systems, except that the administrators of the cloud probably don't have much affinity with you and don't have goals which are aligned with your own.

@maiyannah I don't think that belief in delegation to a central authority is generational. When people don't have much agency, as in times of austerity and material deprivation, then it may be tempting to look to other organisations with more resources to solve the problems.
