I don't think you need to be naive, because it's obvious that the big sites have deep problems. They will try to solve problems like "fake news" and harassment with technical (perhaps machine learning based) measures, but my expectation is that these will only create yet more problems.
The siloized systems aren't the last word in socio-technical systems and they're long overdue for disruption.

@bob Eventually the "big" social networks will drown out the people (it's already starting), and the people will get fed up and leave the "big socials" (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). They'll keep moving around until they accidentally settle on a user-respecting system (like GNU Social or diaspora*). The big corporations will try to sway the opinion back around to something stupid, but no-one will be listening. Look how "cool" it already is to not have your opinion swayed by TV. It'll happen to all the media eventually... in a few generations... once we're all dead and it's new people roaming around the earth.
