I don't know whether I agree with everything that City Observatory says, but this one is spot on: http://cityobservatory.org/transportation_housing_affordability/ It isn't possible to judge housing's affordability unless transportation (commuting) costs are considered.
If you live in #Las_Vegas, but work in Los Angeles, either you spend more time getting to and from work than you spend at home, or you'll get a small place somewhere much closer, so you can stay during the week and just go home on weekends. Either way, you should include those costs in your affordability figures, because you may find that you didn't really save money versus living in #Los_Angeles County. (I used a #SoCal example, but you can switch to other areas and see the same situation.)

When I was in high school, there was a college student that got off the bus near where I lived. She gradually changed from a somewhat overweight person who didn't quite fit in, becoming a person that wore army boots and an army jacket and talked about all the groups of people that would be killed "after the revolution". I just remembered her and I find myself wondering if she's still in that part of greater #Los_Angeles and still waiting for the revolution.

I mostly agree. The Chargers should have stayed in #San_Diego, where they had a loyal and enthusiastic fan base. They and the #NFL erred in moving them 100 miles North.
(I personally care not for the #Rams, either. They left !SoCal for #St_Louis, #MO, and should have stayed there.)

LOL. One of my brothers was in #Los_Angeles this weekend. I did not even know because I had not checked my SMS messages until someone (unknown number* to me) just replied to his series of group texts. That's the "keeps in touch with everyone" brother, so I need to pay more attention. Only a few more years until the 50th year high school reunion, and he's likely to be the one that informs me about it.
* Anyone that did not get in touch after my phone suddenly died three years ago is now unknown, as I don't use any kind of contacts sync service.

Talking with a co-worker about the area in #Los_Angeles County where I grew up, the malls where my friends and I hung out, the high schools I attended, the level of perceived safety. All because she has relatives that grew up in the same general area a few years after me.

@kai I think you should move to #SoCal. You've been really unhappy in #Buffalo, #NY, for several years. You'll never know whether a move to the #Los_Angeles area will improve your life unless you follow Uncle Jed to California.

Give it a decade. If you decide it isn't for you, you can move back to NYState with some different experiences and hopefully better financial resources.

The #Los_Angeles South Bay is a little humid compared to the more desert-y part of !SoCal where I live, but subtracts 20-30F from the peak temperatures, so it isn’t unpleasant, just different.

@kai I haven't lived in the #Los_Angeles metro since the 1980s, but in most areas there was one locally-owned pizzaria that was head and shoulders above the national chains. This still seems to be true in other parts of #SoCal.

OTOH, I tried #pizza in Northern #NJ (Middlesex County / Somerset County area) and did not like it, so my opinion may not count for much.

@kai Sacred bovine! All that isn't what #Los_Angeles is like. True #SoCal is lived fully and talked about a little. Looking at a Washingtonia fan palm against a blue sky on a golden, sunny Autumn day is Los Angeles. Reading about it, that's somewhere else.

Pre FT, Rapid Transit District Line 490 went past what was then called the West Covina Fashion Plaza and then to Puente Hills Mall. The main thing I recall about the #Los_Angeles countywide bus system was that it tended to leave riders stranded. !SoCal

@alpacaherder Maybe living near #Los_Angeles has spoiled me, but I've known for years that usually, those facilities only benefit the teams that play in them. Which means that taxpayer money, whenever possible, should not be used in any way. Not buying the land, not building the facility, not ongoing maintenance.
If a place with 50K residents builds a stadium / arena for its minor league team, that's one thing. You know it is a gift of city funds. But when the stakes get larger, the team should pay all or nearly all the price, since they get all the benefit.
