@chalkahlom I'd gladly help if you were just a little closer. Can you put those trees on a plane and bring them to the #Los_Angeles area?
-
@sulman The #LATimes, in typical fashion, ignores the outlying cities and counties. Aggressive police harassment in #Los_Angeles (both city and county) at one point caused homeless people to flee to other !SoCal areas, such as #Orange_County and the #Inland_Empire. The now-closed Fontana rest area along #I-10 used to be filled every night with car-dwellers.

@kai Which only helps if the tenants have excellent public transit on both ends of their daily commute. Otherwise, it just means more parking tickets for renters who cannot find a legal place to park. Pretty sure it will *not* be beneficial for !SoCal residents in #Los_Angeles or #San_Diego. Maybe it will help in #San_Francisco.

@moonman @ajr You missed the youth group babymaking scene? At the church I started attending my senior year of high school, almost everyone was dating another person in the group. Every few years, there would be sudden flurry of marriages, followed by miracle 5-6 month full-term births. (Being new, I didn't fit in. A lot of the members had been attending that church since birth.) I know it can't only have been a #Los_Angeles thing.

@kai That people flock to places with lower housing costs suggests that high housing prices are one of the biggest issues. My area in !SoCal grew about 15% per year in the mid-1980s, mostly because housing is a lot cheaper than the #Los_Angeles metro. The downside is that local wages are far lower, so many people spend 4-6 hours commuting to and from work.

#Los_Angeles note I have a brother that spends 3-4 hours per day commuting to and from work (35 miles on the #I-405 freeway). I live 100 miles away, and could likely increase my income if I moved within 35-40 miles of downtown, along the #I-10 or #CA-60.
However, I would enjoy life more if I move to a smaller city in another state, even if my income went down a little. I wouldn't move to #NorCal because the self-righteousness is insufferable and the costs are extremely high. It is either !SoCal (as a permanent renter) or the MidWest (where I could buy a home again) for me.

Co-worker S texted to say that she knows I'm watching the !baseball game, so we'll postpone (again) our call. She's in #Los_Angeles right now, so she's well aware how big of a deal this is in !SoCal. Also postponed scheduled calls with Mark and K.

@dirkolmes @theru @heluecht That would explain it. Those were my peak music listening years, but I would only have heard them if they had an audience in the #Los_Angeles, Inland Empire, or High Desert areas of #SoCal.

@sirodoht The 1984 Olympics in #Los_Angeles were really great. That's the last time I paid any attention to the games themselves. That was before the Olympic Games established a history of leaving host cities saddled with debt.

@drift From what I hear, the biggest ever in the City of Los Angeles. Not sure how it compares with Malibu's 2007 Canyon and Corral fires https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_California_wildfires#Los_Angeles_and_Ventura_counties https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corral_Fire !SoCal
The #Los_Angeles Daily News has been a little light on their coverage, but they're the hometown paper for part of the La Tuna fire's affected area https://nu.federati.net/url/65200
