Jawsh McCullaugh (jawsh)'s status on Monday, 13-Nov-2017 09:59:37 UTC Jawsh McCullaugh @bob Eventually the "big" social networks will drown out the people (it's already starting), and the people will get fed up and leave the "big socials" (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). They'll keep moving around until they accidentally settle on a user-respecting system (like GNU Social or diaspora*). The big corporations will try to sway the opinion back around to something stupid, but no-one will be listening. Look how "cool" it already is to not have your opinion swayed by TV. It'll happen to all the media eventually... in a few generations... once we're all dead and it's new people roaming around the earth. -

Jawsh McCullaugh (jawsh)'s status on Monday, 13-Nov-2017 09:43:52 UTC Jawsh McCullaugh And that's part of the reason I've got my own instance. No instance is blocked at AkPS. I can see whoever's posts I want to. That doesn't stop other operators from blocking my instance, though (although I don't know of that happening yet). I wish people would stop trying to silence everyone else. You should take some self-review time if you're scared of other people's words. -

Jawsh McCullaugh (jawsh)'s status on Tuesday, 07-Nov-2017 14:29:24 UTC Jawsh McCullaugh No. It's not bad. It's perfectly fine to not know who a celebrity is. Not knowing all of them means that you've got a better life than just following people who don't care whether you exist. -
Jawsh McCullaugh (jawsh)'s status on Tuesday, 07-Nov-2017 14:26:32 UTC Jawsh McCullaugh Some people get locked into proprietary software because their firmware won't let them boot anything else, and they don't have the money to try again with buying a computer/they didn't know to check in the first place. Those of us who develop for the web need to still be considerate of those people, as the closest they can get to open software is an open web and open browser. -
notklaatu (klaatu)'s status on Tuesday, 07-Nov-2017 09:19:16 UTC notklaatu Funny thing about FB and Twitter and others: people seem to think that usage == ownership. So you get people who *use* these social media, and believe that they also therefore have some say in how they are governed. "We use this thing, so we get to petition for change."
They don't realise they own 0% of the platform. Petitioning for change is pointless, because in spite of your rage, you're still just a rat in a cage.
side note: that's catchy, someone should use it as a song lyric.

I mostly agree with this article and wish more web-developers would follow the suggestions in this article.
