@shpuld @sim I should mention that there is a little work taking place on the #GNU_Social codebase, including adding AP compatibility and better password hashing. -

Getting to know the #gnusocial internals was fun. I managed to get composer autoloading (PSR-4), active orm and a cli pysch powered REPL. I think it would be easier to start from scratch than bring gnusocial into the modern php era.

@lain @1iceloops123 #SPC is #GNU_Social with the choice of either #Pleroma's front-end or 3Qvitter's front-end. You'll have to use GS-compatible clients for it. -

@musicman Something else occurred to me. His #pump.io and #gnusocial servers are probably on the same physical box or at least in the same room, so default timeout settings for #NS may be too short for those with servers in widely scattered places. -

@maiyannah There's a little more than that going on. #Plateia's outgoing posts federate fine, at least to #GNU_Social and #Pleroma. Plateia does not seem to receive incoming posts, even from GS instances, except for direct replies and mentions. -

To be fair, the !StatusNet network that Evan was running became unmanageable -- it cost too much to run, and I think Evan was funding most of it himself (although there were/are a number of paying #StatusNet customers). Evan developed #PumpIO to reduce the number of servers needed to run a federated network, and purposely kept the UI to a minimum to encourage federation. Sadly, that didn't work. Porting identi.ca from StatusNet to PumpIO was intended to introduce people to PumpIO as well as reduce Evan's costs. That partly worked; identi.ca is alive and well as a community, although much reduced from its glory days around 2013. But the #bifurcation did spawn a large number of new StatusNet / !GNUsocial instances, so that was a good thing too. But you're right in that PumpIO never gained widespread traction, the proof of which is in its lack of continued development. In that respect #GNUsocial and !OStatus are more successful than PumpIO -

I'm not sure how you would know if your timeline is "too white" ... other than a few people who talk about their ancestry or use (what we assume is) their facial image as their avatar, a person using #GNU_Social / #Friendica / #Mastodon / #Red_Matrix / #Hubzilla could be of any ethnic group, from any location around the world.
That's actually one of the best things about online communications. I may talk with you for years before I realize you are a member of $RACE and $NATIONALITY or that you live in $COUNTRY. We get the opportunity to build relationships without all that garbage in the way. -

Direktnachrichten werden bei GNU Social (und vermutlich bei allen
anderen Netzwerken) im Klartext in der Datenbank gespeichert. Mir ist
das wieder bewusst geworden als ein Nutzer um Löschung bat und ich
plötzlich alle Nachrichten vor mir hatte.
Das ist doch sehr unangenehm...
Ich habe daher entschieden die Funktion für Direktnachrichten komplett
abzuschalten. Solltet ihr eine Löschung eurer Nachrichten wünschen,
einfach kurz Bescheid geben.
Nutzt für private Nachrichten XMPP oder verschlüsselte E-Mails.

Direct messages at GNU Social (and assumingly on all other networks as
well) are stored unencrypted in the database. I realised that again as
a user asked me to delete his messages and suddenly I had all of them
in clear text in front of me.
Which is very discomforting...
So I decided to turn the direct messages feature off completely. If you
want your messages deleted please let me know.
For private messages please use XMPP or encrypted e-mail.
